4.6 or 5.4 for daily driver

what would be a better choice of engine for a daily driver with the occasional tow? i know my dad's 03 f-150 had a lot more get up and go then his 08 f-250, the f-250 has more pulling power, but getting to 60 mph really sucks...

will the 5.4 just be faster and better for towing, or is it geared more for towing, and will not be as peppy as the 4.6?

going tomarrow to buy a truck, but want to make sure i know what i want when i go to get it...

so far i have narrowed it down to:

06 f-150 XLT, 4x4, 6' bed, extended cab, and low miles... i found one near me looks real nice, good price, and has the 5.4...

thanks,
erick

So there's no reason to even consider the 4.6L...

I know you mentioned you wanted a daily driver.. but what do you want to use the truck for? Do you ever plan on towing, if so.. what do you plan on towing...? I'm not trying to judge.. I have an 08 5.4 FX4, and the most I've ever used it for is pulling a 14ft riverboat, but the 4.6 would have been more than enough.. and this truck is my daily driver aside from that. I chose the 5.4, namely because I wanted an FX4 and I got a great deal on it.

How much are you honestly looking to spend? You might suprised to find that you could probably spend less on a new truck compared to the 06 XLT you're looking at. Honestly, if your using the truck as daily driver, the 4.6 will be great. It's about just as peppy as the 5.4 unloaded, the 5.4 shines when ya have a payload attached and etc.. but obviously the 5.4 is gonna be beefier, just not a huge improvement as opposed to comparing an F-150 vs a F-250..

So.. back to the truck your looking at... How many miles does it have, and how much do they want for it? Personally, I would seriously consider looking into picking up a new XLT. Most of the XLTs around here are going for $15k off the msrp, the majority are Supercrews and have the 4.6, but when you can pick them up for under $20k.. it's definately worth considering.

so basically you don't lose any 0-60 speed time to go with the bigger engine, and it will only give me more...

think im going with the 5.4 unless they get me in a 09 for just under 400/month...

if you want a peppy truck that tows good, just get one used with a 5.4 2v. IMO they had more pep then the 5.4 3v with the electronic throttle.

If you are looking for a 4X4 forget the 4.6. The 4.6 in the 04+ trucks are dogs.

the few trucks that had the throttle issue were cured with a simple tune...

I prefer the 5.4 but the 4.6 is fine for most people and there's muptiple threads on this same topic and if you founda truck for a good price with the other options you want and it has the 5.4 then good for you if not many people sacrifice the 5.4 for the 4.6 in order to get the other options they wanted on a vehicle...

If your getting a SuperCrew 4x4, your so much better off with a 5.4 3v since there is absolutely no difference in gas mileage, & a huge difference in power!

i know theres a difference in power between the 2v and 3v 5.4, but my friends f250 5.4 2v is just about the quickest stock vehicle i've ever driven. maybe it aint stock afterall... i dont know. oh well just stick with a 3v.

i bought it

16,800 and a fair trade in on my jeep wrangler.... they tried to only give my 5,000 on a 10,000 jeep, but with enough "persuading" and threatening to leave 2 times to go down the street to where we will get more for our trade in, we struck a deal.

do all these trucks come with A/C? i looked on the website to check something and saw it did not mention A/C.. is this stock on all 06 extended cab f-150's?

needs some nice tires though... what size will fit this truck? can i go a little bit bigger then stock with no ill effects?
