5.4 crate engines

better stage myself for the worse case scenario, which is usually usual with Ford.

Anyway, I dont want to go the eBay route with those reman's, anybody have an idea what a dealer would want for a remand' 5.4? I have a 98 4six, but I'm not putting that pig of a motor back in. Any aftermarket crate engine depot types things for Ford?

I dont know if my intake would work, but I know some changes to the harness have to be done, make way for COP's and such. . .

What do we have. . .

why not build your self a 5.4? it would be cheaper than buying a crate.

then i gotta buy a longblock, chance it of having internals messed up, paying out my *** for machine work, worrying about specs n clearances n tolerances and having it end up costing more than a reman would. I have though about it, not worth it. Its not a SBC here. . .

The Price Is: $3369.00
Core Deposit For This Unit Is: $1200.00
Skid Deposit For This Unit Is: $50.00
Sold On An Exchange Basis w/Jasper Receiving Old Unit As A Core.

Uh, what if I give them my 4six for a core even though I would be buying a 5.4?

And I really dont want to get rid of the 4six, I'd like to tear it down and inspect it, so something with minimal or no core charge is preferred

I doubt you'll get a core exchange if you buy a 5.4 and give them a 4.6; after all, your core is what they use to replenish their inventory.

An FQR black box engine from Ford is about $3800-4K IIRC, and comes with a 3 year/100,000 mile warranty.

What am I able to bolt directly over to the 5.4 from my 4six?

Intake, drive accessories, trans?

Uh, everything, I think. I haven't tried the swap myself, but I can't think of anything being drastically different. I guess you'll need a 5.4 liter intake manifold since the deck height is taller, but besides that, it should be pretty straightforward.

Yea , that's what was put in for me back in 2000. 240,000 miles ago.

I'm a fan.

I'd get a used one. there out there with relitivly low miles. If you got one with 100k on it it would be good for another 150k. The Rest of you truck will not last that long probably seeing how its a 98 and all. Bet you could find used for less than half the price of a reman.

Can I put my heads on any 5.4? I would build a shortblock and stick my heads on it, then I wouldnt have to do any engine harness stuff n have COP's.... correct?

If you are gonna pull your heads, just slap head gaskets into your 4.6 and drive it till it drops.

eh, I already kinda decided I am not going to do the gaskets on the truck. Not really worth it.
