EGR Valve
Check the EGR passages to be sure they are not partially clogged-up with carbon deposits. A very common problem on some engines, although, I don't know if it is common in your particular engine.
Grab a Haynes or Chilton's book - There priceless if your in the dark on this.
Then look-up the Throttle Body, Elbow/Plenum and EGR Valve. The books are $14 - 19 bucks at most third party suppliers.
Read about it - Assembly/Dis-assembly via manuals and if you still have questions , just ask.
Handy books to have around.
EGR - Has a green VAC line attached. -

Code PO401 - The EGR valve is most likely fine. You need to clean the TB Elbow/Plenum ports to the EGR valve first/ Reboot/ Run 3 drive Cycles/ If code returns/ Replace DPFE Sensor.
Post your engine size and fill out in info via profile. If you want more help.

Great picture jbrew. I'm having the same problem with my '98 F150 4.6. Took the EGR off and cleaned it best I could (lots of carbon buildup)...cleared code and a week later same problem. Looked at the DPFE and she looks great (no deterioration of vac lines, etc....engine only has 85000 on it). Anyway, my question is---is all of this covered in the TB cleaning sticky? My Haynes manual only covers removing those front four bolts in your pic. As far as getting to that PCV elbow and cleaning ports, I don't think that's going to be very helpful. Go with the TB sticky or is there a better tutorial?
By the way, someone in another thread (don't remember which one) said his truck ran like a three-legged pig---every time I envision that (which is usually at work) I bust out laughing so hard I cry. I would just like to thank that individual (whomever you may be) for convincing my co-workers that I'm maniacally insane. Imagine a grown man, building cars, and all of a sudden he bursts into uncontrollable laughter and mutters to himself. AAAAhh, it's the cross I must bear. The Vinman

- You would be surprised how fast that three legged pig can hoof it when that guy with the Meat Cleaver is giving chase.
Replace the DPFE, It's bad 99% of the time if your EGR ports are clear in the Plenum.. The little PCB inside the casing goes bad eventually.
Remember replacement should be purchased from the dealer only. Unless you have the aluminum one - It doesn't matter where you get that one.
