4.6 engine 11.5 mpg
I have a 2003 F-150 extended cab sport 4.6 engine 68,000 miles and only getting 11.5 mpgin town. I keep the service up every 2500 miles, I have had the fuel filter changed, and have the transmision oil changed once a year. I am trying to get a little better mpg out of it, Any suggestion?

Generally horses increase MPG, thats what our engines lack. Most of us have poor MPG highway becuase these pigs have to constantly pull out of OD to climb a rolling hill or fight the wind. Thats where my main issue is, dropping out of OD to accomplish simple hills. 5.4's will always beat us flat in MPG bc they stay in OD cause they have the horses to keep them right up there without bogging, like our trucks do. . . I'm looking into a set of 4.10's to help her pull, even though I will be at a slightly higher RPM while cruising, she ownt have to constantly drop out of OD. . ..

gearing makes a difference in mpg but whether it gets better or worst depends on around town or highway driving. with 4.10 gears you'll get better fuel mileage around town but worst on the highway. 3.73 gears will give better on the highway because it the motor will run at lower rpm's but around town it will get worst because the engine will have to work harder to get up to speed.

My truck wont see much highway when I'm done with school, so around town and such with 4.10's would be grand. And them Ferrari's arent getting much MPG cause there configurement. You can get 600 HP with a 4six stang and see 26 MPG Highway and have a Ferrari with 600 HP and get half that cruising cause of the number of cylinders. . . Its all about how much work the engine has to do to move the vehicle. Less horsepower means its going to be pulling harder to get going. Increase the HP and that the less work the engine has to do to get going.

Forced induction really doe snot improve MPG's. . . Cause at the same time your shoving air down its throat, your just pushing that much more fuel to match. If anything, a turbo since its a non-parasitic load, where as a supercharger requires Horsepower to make horsepower. . . Only things you can do is make her breathe better by adding a CAI(many How-To's on here baout making a home made one) and exhuast.
