The fl400 only fits 2004 windsor built 4.6's, you need the 820.

Their book showed it was for a 2005 5.4 but it was standard thread instead of metric thread?

Here's a Ford list, at the bottom in the "note" section it tells about the use of a 400.http://www.ilma.org/resources/chart_...mendations.pdf

Yea, the threads are metric and standard, it was a stupid idea. The 4.6's are the only ones like that, the 5.4's all use the 820, but at least you know before you *tried* to thread it on in the morning.

I've never seen a difference in filter sizes between a 4.6 and 5.4, hell 6.8 for that matter. All use the FL-820S the one that uses the FL-400S is the v-6 engine. I've built in the factory all these engines and the v-6 plant had only the 400s' and the v-8/v-10 line had only the 820s'.

Indeed, the 400 and FL-1A are the same seal diameter and same threads as each other. They (generally) fit all Ford V-8s and most of the V-6s prior to the modular motors back to the dawn of time. The 820 has been the filter for the 4.6 and its associated modular V-8 and V-10 cousins for a decade and a half.

Ever think to check the owner's manual while you were at the parts store? Just a novel idea, I know... Oh, and there's no motorcraft catalog that crosses an FL-820 to an FL-400.

I I have a 5.4 F-150 that's supposed to run on the 820s and have ran a 400s on it. I was informed by Ford that there wasn't any problem with it because the seal and threads are the same size.

Is the anti-drainback valve the same? Is the by-pass valve the same? Is the pressure that activates the by-pass valve the same? Is the media the same or does it allow for more flow? Is the filters capacity the same? Is the bursting rating the same? Guess what? They're different for a reason and while they might screw on the same, they are not the same internally.

Let's see, the FL400 has a 3/4" - 16 thread and the FL820S is an M22 xx 1.5 thread.

Riiiiight....
