best fuel filter

My 04 5.4Liter has been getting about 12mpg city/highway. It is a 4x4 scab, but I thought it would be closer to 15mpg. 35k on fuel filter, I don't think it would hurt to change it. Besides the Ford Dealer, where Can I buy a Motorcraft fuel filter, or is there a better one.

Edelbrock makes a great filter, but some of them don't fit on our quick disconnect fuel lines. I also just heard from 4wheel parts that K&N is getting into the fuel filter business soon.

Motorcraft here, but I don't see a difference in off brands when I've used them. I get alot of Motorcraft stuff "because I'm here, I might as well pick up........" you know? I change every 50k km's and it's happy with that.

According to my Severe Duty Maintenance Schedule, the fuel filter is to be changed every 15,000 miles. If you haven't done so, do it as soon as possible. I've been using the MotorCraft and have not explored other brands. If anyone is using an after-market fuel filter, I too would appreciate some input.

I agree on the 15,000 miles, what runs out of mine is pretty nasty at that mileage.

Never had a problem with Fram.

Pick 'em up at Wal_Mart. Along with Motorcraft oil filters(cheaper than Fram) and Motorcraft oil(cheap too).

Along with a gallon of milk, case of beer, bag of Ol-Roy for the dogs, toothpaste, soap, roll of Stren, some shavecream, socks, chips, jerky, toiletpaper, detergent, etc.......

No need to spend time and gas running all over town...........

There really is no "easy" way of doing it. You can get the tool at any auto parts store. Get the metal "X" shape tool, not the little plastic clips. When you do it once you'll wonder why you waited so long to do it.

-just remember to relieve the fuel line pressure
-don't smoke, or have a trouble light right where you are working
-make sure you install the new one with the arrow facing towards the engine

"Could be WalMart is the only store in town"

Nah, actually had to go to Autozone for the tool, brake pads, and a gatorback belt.

Change out is a 5 mintue job. Maybe 10 the first time.

Other than a lawnmower, the fuel filter on these trucks are by and far the easiest fuel filters I've ever changed out.

Just pop the fuel cap, don't change out around any flame or spark, use the tool to remove the line(forward and aft), pop on the new one, tighten the fuel cap, and go.

Don't let it intimidate you. In the words of that dude in the Waterboy, "you can do it!"

I agree with cashel. I use the NAPA Gold filters. They have always done well by me. I don't think it really matters which brand you use as long as you use quality fuel and change the filter at the appropriate interval. I am a little **** and change my air and fuel filters every third oil change, approximately every 9,000 miles.
