1999 F-150 Miss fire (5.4L)

Alright, so today coming home from work in traffic my truck started to shake it self to pieces. The Check Engine light started to blink so I pulled over. I have dual exhaust and on the drivers side it was popping out of it, not a loud backfire but just sort of a pop. It was also smelling really rich. Now, The common things if read are either Spark Plug,COP,Fuel Injector causing the miss fire. My guess is a fuel injector is stuck open, but I cant get the code read until Friday. Anybody else have any other possible causes?

mine too started this 2 days ago. I think my plugs are going bad, but I'd like to hear what someone else has to say.

That's okay , it doesn't have to be on. Blink = Code Pending . Off = Code stored. So , see which 300 series code you have Friday and fix it .

So its more then likely not something serious. I was pretty dam scared when it happened, but after some research its most like a coil, spark plug or fuel injector.

Nah ,it's a coil, not to serious yet, but get it fixed ASAP before it fails totally. They usually have them in stock.

I just went through this. Mine was p302 - Misfire Cylinder 2. Replaced Coil and Plug and it runs like a champ again. Luckily it was #2, really easy to go to comparatively.

well, a stealership's tool will read codes that autozone's/ advance auto's won't. that being said, there is a way to tell if your truck is storing codes without a tool. before cranking your truck with the key in the off position, hold down the trip odometer button. while holding it down start truck, and hold for 10-15 sec, or until odometer goes into test mode. the first will be a gauge sweep, among others. scroll through them by pushing the trip odom button till you get to the one that reads: dtc:xxxx. xxxx being your stored code. if there are none, the truck will read dtc:none. turn truck off to deactivate test mode, or it will deactivate upon the end of your drive cycle when you turn the truck off. however, i am unsure if this procedure will work on all 97-03's. i KNOW for a fact it will work on the later ones, though.

I thought you said you had a blinking light, before it shut off ? - Huh - Did you happen to notice how long it blinked before the CEL turned off all together?

3 , 4 , 8 blinks - LOL - I guess I could just ask this - Did the Check Engine Light blink more that once ?

Guys I need your help. Read the first post for the story if you dont have it.

Well I went to get the code read, and it was a cylinder 8 missfire. So I bought a coil. Went home, replaced it. And had a brand new spark plug so I threw that in there aswell. And Its still miss firing. What else can be causing the 8th Cylinder miss fire. Its a new Coil and spark plug

Put a long handled screw driver and listen to the fuel injectors. you should be able to hear clicking. Try 2 or 3 different ones then to listen to #8. If it's not clicking, it's bad.
