Thottle Delay Fix?

Is there a way to fix the throttle delay on the older generation F150s? My '02 with a 5.4L has a noticeable delay and I need some ideas on how to fix it. Here's some things already tried:

1. New fuel filter
2. New COPs
3. New Plugs
4. Cold Air Intake (Ebay)

The only thing not done was cleaning the throttle body. Will this make a huge difference?

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

Not anything noticeable, but maybe like .5% increase in MPG and maybe like 1/2 hp. since yours is so new (compared to mine) i dont think there will be that much buildup. but do it just for the added insurance that you know you already cleaned it and it cannot (or can) be the source for any future problems.

New TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) should help things out. They go bad over time (develop dead spots) like any variable resistor switch.

I agree, that might be it . It could be the plugs as well - OR the MAF is all craped up with chit. The O2's could be contributing but I doubt their the source of the problem.

What kind of plugs are in their?

Have you cleaned the MAF recently?

Does the hesitation occur accelerating from 0-WOT only? Does the hesitation occur in normal operation?

Hi JBrew,

The hesitation happens whether I accelerate from 0 to WOT or when I put the throttle down 1/4 WOT. The delay is 3/4 of a second. I have motorcraft plugs (just changed) and non motorcraft COPs. From my searches, the TPS is located on the drivers side of the throttle body. If this item is replaced, will it improve my throttle response? By the way, the MAF was just cleaned.

Thanks.

Make sure the PCV isn't gummed up , then I would check the fuel pressure/regulator. This may help -

After reading the posts, another thing came to mind: Fuel Injectors. I have the original injectors on the engine and they have never been cleaned. Some oil change places have an injector service where they attach a bottle (don't know what's in it) to the fuel rail and run the engine. What do you guys think about this service? What do you guys use to clean your injectors?

Thanks again for all of the good suggestions!

I would go with cleaning the MAF. Fuel filter is part of normal maintenance. New cops? Why? Were they misfiring? Plugs? I change mine every 30K or sooner. Some change them later or sooner. It seems to be a matter of preference. I change my 02 sensors every 50-60K or so. A new CAI?
When did this start?

Had the same problem.

Mo
I have a 01 screw and had the same problem. First I put in new fuel filter, then went for the new plugs and COP's and still had a very small but noticable delay. Then I cleaned the MAF and that did the trick for me. I bought some of the MAF cleaner sold at the local napa place and cleaned the snot out of it just like it was suggested here on these forums. I was really surprised how responsive my truck became after that. Good luck with that there are some great post on how to do it.
