clutch fan removal?
Get a specialty fan wrench from autoparts store. Should be around $10. One wrench holds the pulley, while you undo the nut on the fan. Remove the whole assembly, then remove clutch assembly.
If you have an air chisel you can use it to loosen the nut with just a quick burst against the counterclockwise edge of the nut.
I'd be interested to hear from pro tech's whether this technique is normally used, or is there some reason not to do this?
I've seen this done many times and done it myself about a year ago on the wife's Dodge 4.7 Durango. So far the Durango has been fine. When I changed the fan clutch there was 97k on the OE pump.

When we'd install the EGR in the factory, man, it took some getting use to. No two are made identical. Having the top or bottom very loose, only a couple turns threaded helps position the other one. I know it's a bitch man, the 3.8 Windstar was bad too. Hang in there Shifty, I want to see the end results of this install, like a jbrew header thread!
As far as I can remember, use a bigger pair of channelocks on a setting almost fully opened to hold the water pump bolts. Take a wrench that fits the clutch nut and turn clockwise facing the engine. I'm almost positive as my hand slipped when it broke free and I sliced a finger on something over on the driverside of the engine. I was anticipating alot of muscle, not the case really and my hand went flying, so lesson..... be cautious!
