Catapillar does F150 Diesel study

In 1999 Caterpillar did an independent study in which they introduced a 3.0L V6 CIDI to the F150 platform.

http://www.osti.gov/bridge/servlets/...ive/771077.pdf

This is a fantastic white paper that is short and worth reading. The bottom line for me is this, when the new F150 Diesel is available, I am taking on a car note.

I had trouble with the link, too. I had to try a few browser and PDF reader combinations before I got it. When I did, I re-saved the doc as a PDF and put it here:

http://redinkmagazine.net/tmp/CatF150Diesel.pdf

You should be able to open this one.

What was it about that white paper that makes you want to jump all over an 2010 diesel? That simply outlines the case for the study, not any results.

CAT isn't going to be the engine supplier and a whole lot has changed so far as emissions regulations since 1999.

I will be seriously surprised if they hit a 50% increase in fuel economy over the current gas offerings.

There power numbers contra**** each other. On the graph it says "up to 550 torque" then under it, it states that it was on dyno at 407. Then while they listed the specs in writing it only said 170 hp but the graph stated 225 hp.

I posted this and was actually alluding to other posts regarding Fords release of the 2009 F150 Diesel with the range rover V6 based, 4.4L V8 diesel it plans to offer in the half ton line. Specs are around 279hp and 404+/- torque. I just happened to run across these white papers. Studies like this are fairly interesting don't you agree? For the next gen F150 diesel, EPA estimates are at 17/23 for gas mileages. That is a substantial gain over the current 14/17 I average. In fact it is an additional 50 to 100 miles on my 24.5 gallon tank! If you read a little more carefully, you will see that the 50% gains in the white paper were goals for he study, not necessarily actual results. Additionally I do not believe the diesel motor (CDID) offered by cat is the same type of setup to be delivered by Ford. I am akin to green thinking so the advantages of biodiesel conversion or duel fuel are appealing to me. Additionally diesels are known for their longevity and of course copious amounts of low end torque, something ideal for a vehicle that weights close to 6000 lbs.

regards....

Right now the PROJECTED #'s for the V6 diesel is around 400 HP and close to the 450 mark on torque .. That's the twin turbo of course - and the one I'm holding out for

Where have you found specs and EPA estimates for an engine that is not all of the way through the development phase yet? Are you speaking of the rating for the engine that the coming engine is rumored to be based upon?

Just curious, not looking to start an argument.

Wow, can you imagine? If they actually put a diesel that produces more HP and better fuel economy of that of a V8, you might see the death of the V8 in the F150. Even with the higher diesel fuel and more cost per unit.

Interesting?

Cool. : )

You and the other "frequent contributors" have helped me out so many times without knowing it (I use the "Search" feature frequently) so I'm happy to be able to do a little something in return.

The wife and I once tried to add up the value of the repairs and maintenance I've done since I bought my truck in Nov 2006 w/89K on it. We lost track somewhere over $2,500.

I'll leave that pdf there for a few weeks in case anyone else needs it.

Now back to our thread . . .
