leave the filter in. its not just dust you haveto worry about. i find lots of stuff in airboxes under filters. anything from tree leaves to huge dead bugs. dont want that in your engine.

Driving around without a airfilter is like playing Russian Roulette, you never know when your engine will suck in something & go BOOM!.........

Sheesh - cough up 13 bucks and go buy a new paper filter for now! That's what a Napa Gold costs and it's as good as any. Sucking dust in will cost you a lot more than that in the long run.

for my 77 from autozone i payed 210 out the door if i rember right its listed at like 230 but i had my 20 bucks saved up. i noticed a diff when i frist did my intake. alot of people on here liek there AF1's but i got the K&N it did just what i wanted noticable HP and gasmilage i think it added about 30-40 more miles per tank! i dont have a tuner but the K&N was worth it. the hardest part of the install for me was taking the MAF out of the stock intake houseing the whole thing took 45Mins.

Get the AF1 - The 3" if you still have the sh^ty factory tune.

Get the AF1 - The 3.5" if your have the much better Troyer tune.

K&N has a fitting correctly issue with some models - IMO , it can't be trusted.

The 2005 f150 stock system is fine for the tune you have. You don't need an intake on that model yet. The 04-present models are seriously under-tuned from the factory . Your better off getting tuned first . Tunes for your truck can be easily acquired via -Troyer Tunes.

If I had your model for the very best outcome and noticeable gains , I would do this all at once.

Here's what I would do -

Order Tunes , AF1 3.5", Magnaflow Cat Back System. Do all this thru Troyer and do it all at the same time so that you'll be tuned according to your mods.

You'll sh^t your pants when you hit the pedal after doing this exactly as said.

You really don't need an intake yet , you won't be impressed.

how much did you pay for your K&N?
My truck is an 2001 supercrew with the 5.4T....and if I recall right my series 77 intake was 155$ shipped.

the 3.5 requires tuning-period!-phil
