5.4 Misses

I'm new here but I did do a search and came up with little if any information.

Truck is a 2001 5.4 supercrew.

When in overdrive, if I coast a bit, then step on the throttle lightly on a slight uphill grade, the engine will miss. If it downshifts, the miss goes away.

I have tried to power brake several times slowly increassing the throttle but it won't miss then.

I have cleaned the mas air flow sensor. New plugs did not help. New fuel filter did not help. No codes or service engine soon light.

Currently I bought a COP and have started trying the new COP in each of the cylinders.

Any inside information here? I don't want to take it to a dealer if I can't get it to miss in the shop. It's cheaper for me to throw parts at it than it is for the dealer to do it.

Can a dealer figure out which cylinder is missing? Is there information in the PCM that the dealer can get at that my code reader can't?

Thanks for any help.

Jbrew is wise, do what he says and problem will go bye bye. He said the same for me and problem solved. Replace all 8 at the same time.

Yea , best tune up for these trucks . Keeping the integrity of the ignition system is key . When the PCM sends that low voltage signal to each coil and they all react the same way - she performs as she should , you may have to hang on to something after 3600 RPMs - she really pulls with a healthy system.

Changing them all at once is the best thing to when they get old.

What happens with age is the windings begin to breakdown inside the coils and your truck will run like it's heavy, tired and constipated. ---Fact..

Good luck with her~

Wow... only 96 for all eight. Count me in. I paid 65 out the door for one at a checker auto.

Quick update... it's not the passenger side front cylinder or the passenger side rear cylinder. If it's more than one coil that is weak, I'll never find it doing it the way I'm doing it now.

Do you think I'll find the bad coil this way or am I better off shotgunning the whole bunch?

Thanks for the replies and the web link to the coils... I never would of looked there.

I'm curious how this turns out. I have a 2007 FX4 w/ 5.4L and mine started doing this about 4 days ago. I called a mechanic friend who works at a local dealer. I was going to take it in since it's under warranty, but I wanted to be armed with more information.

Heres some , you can't run those COP's , you have a 3 valve. Just take it in since your covered and don't worry.

If you want to upgrade your 3valve COPs - rpmoutlet has them for $199 - "MotoBlues"

More info... it also misses when taking off from a stop sign. Only does this occasionally, I would call it more of a flutter than a miss coming off the stop sign.

When it misses at 45 MPH, it will almost shake your head.

If I do a power brake, I can't get it to miss.

I'll post more as I learn more.

The favorite spot for a weak COP to miss is @ 45mph right after the shift into OD.

Mine started the exact same symptoms last Friday evening.... ALL of them! Drove it Saturday, and finally threw a CEL light. Code reader indicated bad spark on #4. (Can't remember the exact terminology.)

I ordered a set of COPs from Global Sunday AM, and have 8 new plugs ready to go in, too. Trouble is, I have a camping trip Friday, and need the truck to pull the camper. Hope Global ships quickly, or I'll be blowing $20 at the yard on a used COP for a temp solution.

I disagree, number 7 and 8 were the royal pain. Holy cow does it make a difference after replacing them (all 8). More C.O.P victims, it's spreading like the bird virus, let this be a lesson to those having not experienced this yet, have your coils ready

You must not have that big freakin harness cradle in the way on the 2000. Makes #4 hard to get at . You have to remove the cradle an use bungy cords to hold it out of the way..

Oh, yeah. It's a beauty alright. Can barely touch the thing! Not looking forward to doing it at all, let alone twice. (I'll not have time to change the plugs and coils before Friday.) As for the spare, I was going to have seven spares anyway! Maybe I'll end up with a full set of un-reliables!
