Any reputable brand 5W20 - such as Mobil 1. If you really want the best, Amsoil Series 2000 0W30. Use a quality filter such as a Mobil 1 or Amsoil.

I've been running Amsoil series 2000 OW30 with the amsoils filters for years in my 2001 V6 F150, my dad runs it in his 2001 V8, I ran it in my '86 F150 for years before, it's the best stuff.

If you're in edmonchuck, you're in luck, you can get the stuff right from the amsoil distribution centre in town (it's in the white pages), anyone can set themselves up with a cash account...

I run the bypass filter mod as well; I reccommend that if you're a stickler for clean oil (i am... )

Changing my own oil and filter for years I would use only synthetic. Then as the price of synthetic reached the roof I used 50/50 synthetic/regular Penzoil. As the price of synthetic blasted through the roof I considered how long I have had engines that never blew up versus the extreme cost of synthetic. I am now back to Penn 5/20w. I anticipate no problems.

I do not post this to initiate a quarrel. I think everyone is allowed, and has my encouragement to use any product they wish on their rig. However, pencil out the cost of synthetic vs regular oils and mix into the equation the expectancy of an engine blowing up due to using just regular oil of one's choice. Then do what makes you feel good.

If the synthetic costs 3 times as much but you can go 5 times longer between changes isn't the synthetic still cheaper?
I use Amsoil.

$10 for a handle of regular, $3 for a filter. $52 a year assuming you change your oil & filter every 3,000 and driving 12,000 a year.

$20 for a handle of synthetic, $3 for a filter. $32 a year assuming you change your oil every 12,000 (and filter every 3,000) and drive 12,000 a year.

The savings grow more and more, the more you drive in a year.

And I don't only use synthetic for the savings, but also the protection of my engine.

.
12,000 between changes? Then you don't live where there is normal dust, dirt, or precipritation.

once a year??? You might want to consider 2x a year. i wouldn't recomend going over 6 months (IMO). Just my .02 cents. I also agree you should do what ever floats your boat. Just consider it... maybe send a sample in for oil analysis at 8-10 months and find out if it would be worth it. You might be surprised. Just curious, what kind of milage you looking at? and Norm, you use Amsoil, correct?

As long as your filtration can keep the oil analytically clean, you can stretch synthetic out to a ton of miles. Using a bypass kit, you can usually get Amsoil to go 100k if you are so inclined.

The 0w30 that I use is actually rated for up to 35K miles. I think a year is fine considering I do mostly highway on my daily commute of about 30 miles each way. Plenty of time for the oil to get hot and boil off condensables. I do 12K to 15K max in a year. Amsoil is the best for extended oil change intervals. Oil analysis has already been done.

More power to you then Norm! Glad you had the it analyzed already. The more I read into it, the more I agree Amsoil is a very good oil. Are you using their bypass kit? extra filtration? I have seen too many destroyed Mercedes engines cuz the owner swapped to Synthetic, then went 30k - 50k because they had "high mile" oil... those people are what we like to call "job insurance".

I am not using bypass filtration yet, that is why I only go to 15K max. Their bypass kit is excellent though and I may add it. I am over 110K miles now and have no concerns about my engine. I bet my engine will outlast other parts of the truck!
