Question Inexpensive power upgrades?

I just bought a 98 F150 (4.6L) .
I want to add horsepower without robbing gas mileage but more importantly I dont want to shell out the big bucks. It already has dual exhuast and I plan on getting a cold air intake soon.
What other useful/inexpensive enhancements can I make to add a little oomph!

Pick Two:
Cheap
Reliable
Power

There really aren't many inexpensive ways to gain lots of power, or at least not reliably. Intake, exhaust, and chips/tuners are the most common, of course. There are also underdrive pulleys, but then your belt has a tendency to slip off. You may also want to look into ignition upgrades, as those can help you some gain power (especially if some of your components are already worn out).

That's probably not much help, but it's just my take on it.

hi.

Well - that's almost a 10 year old truck. What's the maintenance history?

If you don't know it, I'd recommend you spend your mod money on all the myriad things a truck that old really needs, before going after perf mods.

And - there a LOT of things it needs. You may be surprised at what gains perf-wise and mileage-wise, could ( and probably will) result.

Also cheap perf mods (and I mean genuine perf mods that actually work) - the two terms are mutually exclusive, IMHO.

Lay the groundwork first. Layering perf mods on a marginally/poorly maintained vehicle is just asking for trouble anyway.

Here a short list (in no particular order):

Maint:
- plugs
- front O2's
- fuel filter
- tranny maint/fluid/filter
- driveline fluids
- tb/egr cleaning
- MAF cleaning
- new coil packs/other ignition components
- new air filter
- there's more ... use search

perf mods:
- e-fans ( homegrown if you are inclined)
- ignition upgrades
- used canned flash tuner ( check Classifieds here) - e.g Edge, SuperChips 17xx, 18xx
- full synthetics all around
- AF1 intake
- gears (can be relatively cheap if a 4x2) 4:10's on stock rubber
- catback (really, more for sound than anything else)
- hi-flow cats
- there's more ... use search

Best advice I can give ya ....
