From what I've read, it depends on if you have R12 or R134a. If you have R12, you need to completely get it out of the system first, retro-fit new valves on your system, and pump R134a into it. The kits to do so are available anywhere (Walmart, AutoZone, etc..) and most places would be thrilled to get the rest of your R12 out for you.
If you already have a R134a system, you can buy that at the same stores as above, and a nozzle with a pressure gauge on it. then its just a matter of adding it to the system at the right pressure.
Check under the hood near/on the compressor/condensor to see what kind of system you have.
