Gutting cats is against Federal law, so most shops anywhere are going to be picky.

Most OBD II emissions inspections these days are simply a visual inspection and a code check.

Won't gutting cats instantly trip a code or 2?

Most shops won't touch your cats at all, even for high flows, but oh, say, if you attend college in a podunk town, a small muffler shop will gut them for about $150 CASH. Or if you know somebody who can weld, have them do it for you. And it will throw two codes, A bank 1 and bank 2 catalyst system below efficiency or something like that. I would just clear it with my Edge Evolution. It'd seem to pop on every 300 miles or so...
And like glc said, the emissions tests here for OBD-II vehicles are a visual inspection and a computer scan. No check engine light = I passed no problem. Even though the only sniffer test you needed for that truck to fail was your nose...

I gutted my precats only, and left the rear's and havent thrown any codes. ever.

JBrew gutted all 4 of his cats, his truck ran poorly, but didnt throw a code (from what he has said)

Id also recommend cleaning the injectors at a shop.
And an Efan can really help wake the truck up. I wish i did mine sooner then i did it.

Some throw codes, and some don't. It's hit or miss really. And I wonder why its running poorly... Mine ran much better afterwards...

If you gut all four of them you dont have enough "backpressure"

yeh mines running better with two of em gone, but maybe he will slide back in here and give his opinion

Hrmm...If I just gut 2 of them do they have to be the pre-cats? I figured if the shop would gut any of them it would be the ones in the rear. Or is it better for backpressure to leave the rears?

I just put mine back together - had to get some pieces welded, I had a few leaks before.. - I cut my cats totally out temporarily - until I get some longtubes and magnaflow high flow cats installed..

I haven't drove her yet , I let yuh all know ..

Update - Just drove it - It runs good , computers still adjusting... It's way to loud in lower RPM's. It's quiet if I step on it. I'm running a 24" Magnaflow cat back . The sound was awesome when I had just the forward cats on , sounded like a GT. It's just to loud and droney now.

BTW - No codes - hasen't thrown any codes..I'm aso running the stock CAI w/K&N filter.
