Anyone ever heard of a slinger for crankshaft

OK just rebuilt my 5.4 ordered my gaskets and seals from my local ford Dealer which we have an account at. Put everything together have a massive oil leak from the rear seal called them and they said "you never ordered the sliger part #" WTF is a slinger ??

Looks like I'll be dropping the tranny this weekend.

Slinger?

Last time I checked, the slinger may be an Oil slinger. Used to "sling oil" I think that it would be on the end of the crank to sling oil onto the timing chain in order to lube it.

Since I have never rebuilt a ford engine, I am not sure though.

The oil slinger for the rear seal is just a plastic ring that is installed after the rear main seal is in place. It helps to prevent oil leaks at the rear main. You say you have a massive leak at the rear main? I have seen engines returned from dealerships with no slinger installed and they never leaked at the rear main. Not sure what your defininition of massive is but it sounds like there is something else going on. Have you checked around the rear seal retainer for the source of oil? Did you apply Loctite or equivelant sealer around the retainer sealing surface before installing it? Was the main oil galley cup plug installed before the retainer was. Any deep scratches or nicks in the crank to seal mating surface? They make a sleeve that can be installed over the crank sealing surface if it is damaged. Don't mean to ask a bunch of dumb questions but I'm a little suspicious that something else is causing the "massive" leak. Good luck

Thanks

No not alot of dumb questions.

1. Its only leaking around the rear seal.
2. Yes loctite clean and even rtv black applied as a precautionary measure.
3. Crankshaft is brand spanking new.
4. I dont remember taking out the slinger at all maybe thats why I didnt order one.
5. I ordered the slinger and we'll see on Saturday when I drop the tranny whats causing it.

Otherwise damn this motor runs nice with the cams. next will be exhaust and tuning. Here goes a pic of the vehicle (Dont Laugh)

will post later having issues.
