so when i went to crank my truck today, the engine would not idle cleany, it would only sputter at around 500 rpm, so i tryed to give it some gas, floored the revs would only climb to about 1700 rpm, or to about 3200 rpm where it would almost act like it was bouncing off a rev limiter at 3500 rpm. Any ideas on what the problem could be. Could it be bad gas or a small glitch, or is it something serious.

 

How many miles?

 

Sounds like a fuel delivery problem. If its the new style '04 you have the returnless fuel system and the pressure would be a little different than the old style. That might explain the fluctuating RPM. Be careful about running this way because Ford had a lot of problems with injectors hanging open and hydrolocking the engine on this year model.

 

its got 77500 miles, thanks for the information about the injectors, glad i shut her down and left her there instead of trying to drive it anyway.

 

well i took it to the dealer to see what the problem was. Turns out that a bug had made its way into my motor and was stuck in my mass air flow sensor which caused the truck to shut its self down.

 

Damn Bugs I had a mouse build a nest overnight once It was the funniest thing I've ever heard of.
