Read your service manual. It is located in the pouch with your owner's manual. It is on the first or 2nd page. Take it with you to the dealer if you want. They were ASTONISHED when I brought mine in and asked for a pcv valve. They made a photocopy of it!

I checked it out. All mine says is that the dealer will replace for free at 60,000 miles unless I live in California or Canada.

Please do not confuse your dealership's practices with Ford's policy as they are not necessarily one in the same. Ford's recommended service interval has shifted from 3000 miles to 5000 miles in nearly all of their vehicles over the last 10-15 years.

Regarding the high oil comsumption. A lot of good ideas here and things to check. Also check the engine oil fill cap O ring. If it is broken or missing that can cause high oil consumption. Valve seals are also another place oil can get past and cause high consumption. Good luck

Not wanting to hijack this thread. But I bought my truck in Sept of '05 with 170,000 miles on it, I now have a little over 197,000 and am wondering if their is way to tell if the PCV valve was replaced. The one in my truck now says motorcraft.

The replacement is a duplicate of the original... They're free, so go get you one.... But if you don't have any problems, why mess with it?

Consider the PCV a consumable - they need to be replaced at certain intervals in order to keep doing what they do (I didn't know about the risk with a backfire though)

The original poster said something about not seeing black smoke...last I checked, burning oil is white smoke, black smoke is an excessively rich mixture, is that right?

Black is excessive fuel, white is coolant and oil is BLUE!
