4.6L air tube replacement

Dad's air tube between the EGR and exhaust manifold rusted through and now it won't pass the stupid PA emissions inspection. Anyone have the pleasure of changing one of these on a 97?

Doesn't sound very hard at all..... If you don't want to buy one, you might get a local machine shop to fix it, or build you a new one...

Ok faster, how long did it take ya? Looks like I can pull the drivers side tire for some more clearance down at the manifold.

Dad said he will get me plugs, wires, cap and a rotor for the diesel if I do it for him. He was counting on me not listening to him like usual and taking that deal. I said how bout for the 84 and we called it even.

Whoo hoo, looks like fun project ahead...

yes take tire and fender well off, let the engine manifolds heat up. spray some penetrating oil onto the flanges. then let engine cool off.. take ur wrench and loosen them. and it should come off... if not u might be cuttin it and maybee buying a new manifold. or just buy some headers:-p

I bought a new one ($78!!!) at the local stealership when I did my headers because I thought the original one was going to be shot, but it was in OK shape. Wasn't too hard to remove. I still have the new one, was planning on returning it for a refund. Hopefully they don't give me a hassle...

Well got the old one off and picked up a new one. Actually the only thing wrong with the old one is the nut down below was completly rusted away. It popped off in three pieces with a screwdriver. Along with most of the threads on the manifold... grrr...

How much do these manifolds run? This one doesn't have anything to thread to on the one side of the fitting and I don't think the new tube will thread on.

All-right got er all done ready to pass emissions. I'll make this a simple tech writeup for future searches.

1. Pull the drivers side wheel and the well shroud.

2. There is the rusted off air tube

3. The nut fell off with a screwdriver poke.

4. Manifold connection.

Part number

Lower end installed.

Upper end installed. I had to remove the bracket for the vacuum line that runs to the brake booster. Also, I popped off the clutch fluid tank for better access.

And then it was Installed. We don't need no stinkin dealer...

It's crazy seeing everything rusting on your truck. I haven't washed my truck in over 2 years, and nothing is rusting... Except maybe the manifolds themselves, but not bad, just surface rust....

Mine was even more rusty. I live a couple of miles from the ocean, so the salt just eats everything...

Yup, PennDOT puts down "liquid hell" in the winter to keep icing down. Also, driving the F150 through all the snow all the time hauling snowblowers doesn't help either.
