I can't be 100% sure, but on the mustang I had, there was a fitting like that which had a temp sensor screwed into the side of it. The top had a bolt that was removed to bleed air out of the cooling system when refilling it. I don't know it's purpose here though.

Edit: What a great first post by me, all pointless.

Another hint. The hose that is attached to it goes to this on the intake plenum.

The hoses that go to the t-body have to do with the water heated PCV valve that we started building at the Windsor Engine Plant sometime in 02 I think. I think it was one of those half year intro things. Hope this helps, and after looking at the pic it seems like a plug for a temp sensor on the cross over tube that must react to the PCV, not sure how it works, but I know it's PCV related. I didn't like the early setup as I thaught it fit in the grommet loosely, but it must work fine. Hope this helps.

Mine is a 1999 5.4L. The coolant line (in Yellow) seems to flow around the line from the PCV (in Red). It seems I remember blowing through the lines to figure out if it was 4-way but as I remember it crossed over like you say. The PCV line joins up near the PCV with a Y connector. One PCV line goes to the back of the upper intake manifold and the other one runs into the Plenum so there are TWO paths from the PCV to the engine.

OK, another question.

It looks like this is where my Haynes manual says the Coolant temperature sending unit is supposed to be but it must have been relocated so this contraption in the picture could go in its place. Does anybody know where the coolant temperature sending unit is on my 1999 5.4L engine?
