fuel filter headache

on my 95 f150, as probably we all do, I have the spring clips on the fuel lines that go to the fuel filter. These things are a pain to get off... I have the cutesy little tool thing that you are supposed to just slip over and pull back and get the line to release but it's not working well for me. Has anyone else experienced difficulty with these? If so, whats the solution (besides taking it to the ford shop)?

you prolly have one of the steel butterfly removal tools. (X shape) in my experience they suck. They don't fit well and make removal very difficult.

go out and buy the little round plastic ones. or if you want to spend the money buy the fancy aluminum ones. they both work much better.

it takes a little practice.

good luck-

Man you're right I just changed mine on my 03 and it was a pain. I dont know the exact size of the fuel line but I had to use the smaller size on the "butterfly" removal tool and had to pull really hard to separate the two, just try to relax , keep your cool and stick with it, it will come off and you'll be glad you did'nt pay someone to do this.

In '95 there were both types of fuel filter fittings. One with the disposable retaining clips and the other that others were describing. Get the right tool and life is easy, just take your time.

I've even seen trucks with one new and one old style.

Don't forget to release the fuel pressure.

A NEWT said, be shure to release the fuel pressure and before you install the tools push the fitting on to the fuel filter this will alow the edges of the clamps tp more easaly seperate from the filter. All the time the filter has been installed the edges of those fingers have been digging in. It is easier to understand what you are trying to accomplish once you see how the fitting is made.

Try a bit of WD40 or penetrating oil. This will loosen up the crap/rust that gets into the spring lock. The tool will then slide on, the spring will expand and it will release like it was brand new.
