Bad Idle
Bad Idle
Hey.
Just got a 2005 F150 XLT. 5.4 L Triton.
What I found is sometimes when I start the truck and put it in drive, or come to a stop... the idle get very low, like almost 250, and the truck will shut off or the wrench will show up on the engine.
Now, I read in the manual that this could be cause by poor gas, but I did fill it up with 89 Oct.
Any ideas?

Most likely Idle Air Control Valve Sensor, MINE DID THE SAME THING.

Just put a new IAC (Idle Air Control) Valve on my 98 4.6 and cleared up the rough idle.
Cost 60 bucks at NAPA, takes less than 5 minutes to change.
IAC valve is located on top of the throttle body and sometimes gets clogged up with carbon. It is held on my 2, 8mm bolts. When you pull it off, flip it over and use a screwdriver and some carb cleaner to work the spring and plunger back and fourth to free it up. Be careful not to break it, although you might need a new one anyway. After letting it dry for a while, put it back on, hook up the sensor, and fire up your truck.
You may also try cleaning your throttle body. This is a lot more involved than the IAC. The ports on your throttle body get clogged often with carbon and will cause pinging, rough idle, and bad gas milage/performance. I do this once a year on my 4.6 and it makes it run like brand new every time.
Do a search on cleaning your throttle body, youll find lots of pics and info on it...first time will take 2-4 hours or so. Not too bad if you're used to wrenching...good luck!

An '04+ 5.4 3V uses drive by wire, idle speed is adjusted directly by the PCM, there is no IAC valve on these engines. I think there's an updated PCM calibration for stalling, might wanna check with your dealer.
