Truck wants to die when idling
Hello everyone
I have a 2000 f150 with the 5.4L engine, and my problem is when it's idling. Today i went to start my truck up and let it warm up, i noticed that it was running really ruff when it was just idling. The rpms were dropping down to like below 500 rpms, almost dieing on me. I took it out for a drive and it runs great, but when i come to a stop sign it wants to kill on me. Also sometimes it smokes alot when i start the truck up after its been sitting for a while, like when i leave work. I don't know why its idling so ruff. Also my truck has 80,000 on it.

Sounds like an IAC problem (Idle Air Control). Pull it off and clean it with lots of brake clean. There is a small piston inside of it, move it back and forth to make sure it moves easily. Let it dry well and put it back on. If that doesn't work the IAC is probably bad. Then you will have to replace it. Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

HTF are you going to scrub an IAC with a toothbrush? The inside is what needs to be cleaned and I've yet to see a toothbrush that would fit in there.
The best thing that I've founs is to remove the TB, the elbow behind it and the IAC from the truck and use a set of small picks (made by Stanley) and carb cleaner to clean out the junk.

If you are still wondering where the IAC is on your truck because you aren't quite sure what the other guys meant. Here are some pics, you can buy a new IAC for about $45 at Autozone, or clean the inside of it with electrical contact cleaner which you could buy at the electrical department of Home Depot or something. I've heard that if you just clean them out, they end up crapping out about 8,000 miles later. I jsut replaced mine...
