Gettin' a sound...

Hey guys... Just found this site, looks pretty sweet. Anyways, I've got an '02 F-150 with the 5.4L in it. I have started getting a noise from under the hood, but it doesnt seem like engine noise. It's sort of an airy, ticking sound when I step on the gas. It seems to be on the passenger side somewhere, but seems separate from the engine running. It is most noticable at low speeds and almost disappears at faster speeds. Any ideas?

Thanks!

ticking could be an exhaust leak. Lots of guys have broken exhaust manifold studs. I'd check those. Look for any place where you can see carbon blowby.

Before you drive another yard I would check your plugs.
See if any are loose.

If you find a loose one you may have a damaged thread.

I hope it is a minor leak cos working on plus inserts is a PITA

A ticking sound? My first bet would be the injectors. Mine tick like something else, on the passengers side especially.

On mine it was an exhaust tick caused by the broken manifold studs (esp. check the rear cylinder(s)). Mine broke on upper & lower on both #4 & #8.

I removed the rubber inner fender to verify. It only manifests under load, so I had a helper hold the brake & put it in 2nd w/ some gas to confirm (obviously don't be under vehicle).

It's turned into a bit of a project for me...

Yeah, check those spark plugs immediatly! and do so carefully.

Also, my pcv valve made some clikcy noises when it was needing replaced. the pcv valve is on the passenger side of the motor in the middle of the valve cover. It plugs into the valve cover with a vacuum line on the other side. Pull it out of the cover and see if the noise goes away.

If you don't know exactly where it is coming from, take a length of tube, like garden hose or fuel line and put one end to your ear and the other on or close to parts you suspect are making the noise. When you find the right one, it'll sound clear as day.

Well, I hope its nothing to outrageous... I've only got 44K miles on my truck. I guess I'll take it in to have it checked. I'll check the plugs to see if anything is loose first.

While your "checking" the plugs, "check" that PCV valve, you'll be staring right at it.

I'm getting the same sound but not all the time. It is usually cold out when it does it. Only when the truck is in gear. Usually when the truck is over 2000 RPM. Mine started with a few miles of making a quick stop and I head a loud thud like I had be rear ended.

Does this sound the same?

Sounds like a train? lol It get annoying after a while, I checked my plugs, pvc, exhausts, so I think its the injectors, either that or a lifter

Just thought I'd let you guys know what the problem was... turned out to be the exhaust manifold gasket. Midas charged me around $250 to fix it. Seems to have solved the problem so far, she's running nice and quiet.
