I had a 99 GMC with the 5.3 and yes it was fast.... but that is about the only good thing I could say about it. It would tow a load and it was fast but, after rebuilding the front diff, and it eating two tcases, I cut my losses and went back to ford and bought an 01 F-150 scab and 4.6l. It was a bit of a let down going from the 5.3 to the 4.6 but I get better mileage, the truck is way more comfortable and better handling, but I miss those extra ponies when racing up the on ramps. The other time it reminds me its a "small" V8 is when the AC is running and I start up a grade on the highway.

Long story short I wouldn't trade my ford for a chevy now if they gave me one. I just hope it doesn't burn to the ground before they expand the recall on that damn switch.

My 2 cents

My buddies 4.3L Chevy 1500 automatic supercab is faster than my 4.6L supercab. Apples to apples I would say. However, My ford interior is in better shape at 156,000 miles vs. his 30,000 miles. The Chevy did not hold up well in the Florida sun.

I like my Ford.

I like the turtle and the hare theroy myself. I dont care how long it takes me to get there, as long as I get there.

However I will say a friend of mine has a 01 Silverado Ext Cab (5.3 I think)
Automatic, 4x4, MT Bearclaws ect ect.. I kept hearing he could pull me aroud the shop la la la la. I took 4 days of it until I couldnt stand no more.

We backed em up hitch to hitch on the shop floor. My old 97 droped about 1 to 1.5 inches, all 4 wheels started pulling at about the 4foot mark the chevy gave up and chunked the rear end out the plate.

I had his front tires off the ground according to the people who watched

Now his 01 vs my 97 is in the books, his went home on a hook. It was real dumb of us to do, but I am so glad I did it. Made me feel like a teenager again for about 15 min.

The chevys are quick yes but I have had some good outcomes racing my friends truck. 2004 GMC extended cab 4by4 with the 5.3 and 4.10 gears it weighs 2410kg or 5302 pounds. My truck 2004 Scab FX4 flareside with the 5.4 and 3.73 gears weighs 2790kg or 6138 pounds. with both trucks stock I took him off the line every time until I shifted into 2nd then he would pull on me by about half a truck lengthant the end of the 1/4 we were dead even.
I got 3" dual exhaust put on and I beat him by a truck length every time now.
I also raced my dads 2004 3/4 ton Dodge quadcab 3.73 gears and weighs 3020kg or 6644 pounds, after months of him saying that he would kick my ****. Same result took him of the line and he was 1/2 truck length behind me until I hit 3rd gear then I pulled away to about 1 1/2 truck lengths by the end of the 1/4.

The new trucks have power it just comes on alot smoother because of the drive by wire. Cold air Intake, exhaust and a tuner wake these trucks up.

Another thing about the GMC, we went camping last year my buddy was pulling a 16' aluminum fishing boat that weighs about 2200 pounds and I had a 16' snigle axle holiday trailer that weighed almost 4000 pounds and he tried to pass me up a hill, his bumper was at my rear tire when I punched it and he couldn't pass me even though he had a big jump in me. I felt proud!!

These are the trucks I think mine looks way better too!!

I have had only Chevys until I bought my '05 F-150. I never drove a Silverado with the 5.3, but had two Avalanches with them. The 5.3 is a pretty good motor, but didn't have quite enough power in the much heavier Avalanche to suit my driving style. Unfortunately for me, I test drove a couple of F-150's before hand, but not the one I actually bought and come to find out, it has the 3:55 rearend in it. Even with the 5.4L in it, this thing is a bigtime dog. I plan on doing some mods to it and one will have to be changing that gear out. All said, that is my only complaint about this truck, the interior is far better than any GM I've had. I towed a heavy **s trailer this weekend, and other than it had a helluva time getting going from a stop, the truck was very stable on the freeway and on back roads. It was my fault for not driving the truck before I bought it, but they had to have it brought up from another dealership to get the options I wanted...reg cab, long box, 5.4L...it was one of those deals where it arrived just in time to get it prepped and to get all the paperwork done that day. Other than that, though, I am very happy with this truck and would definately buy another one.

One thing to remember when making this comparison is that the chevy's drivetrain is a good bit smaller than the fords. Look at the rear axle and transmission. The ford is alot bigger requiring more power to accelerate (higher rotating inertia and friction with larger bearing, gears etc.) but this is why the fords transmissions and rear ends last longer and can take a beating especially towing.

Thats weird a friend of mine has a 97 Chevy z71 with a 5.7, and my 04 FX4 Screw blew it away the whole way through a quarter mile. Both bone stock. Myabe something was wrong with it or something but thats weird. My ford wouldnt even spin the tires and he would light them up but i still put the hurt on him.

Umm. I didn't bother reading through all the posts but let me say one thing. IT'S A TRUCK!!. You're worried about 1/4 mile and 0-60 buy a Lightning and race the Chevy SSR thing. Come on now. Trucks are for work and play not for drag racing. Real world working is what you should be concerned with.

you do realize the chevy is 8 years old. go line up a new one.

21 years in a row best selling pick up you do the math.
who sales the most hamburgers, in most cases the volume sales leader is not nessesarily the best product. the f150 is the hands down winner in several catagories, it dosent get it a pass on the fact that it needs more power OR better mpg.

Trucks are for work and play not for drag racing.
so all the socker moms and the f150 sitting in covered parking downtown are for work??? f150's are for the casaul hauler of yard mulch and pulling small recreational vehicles, f250 and f350 are designed towards the working man.
the lightning is no longer available and the dodge hemi or nissan will give the ssr all it wants in a race. Dodge has improved it product and image drastically, the "power" and the "hemi" marketing are working rather you want to admit it or not.

the ford is the best looking and the best driving of the current truck available but it is dead a$$ last in the acceleration department with the same mpg as the rest, we deserve more, dont be afraid to ask for it.

Depends on who you talk to many magazines and things have lined them up and said the ford was faster. Dont get me wrong im not sying its a speed daemon and it is near the back of the pack but many people have calle dit faster than the toyota and the chevy.

Wish this wasn't the case with Ford but I have to agree with you. These trucks are the slowest of the trucks out there. They gave us the 3v 5.4L engine but then they new trucks are suppose to be 500lbs heavier than the old trucks.

If they don't want to give us the hp/tq #'s like the Dodge' Hemi, then they should design a 5-spd auto tranny. That's the reason the Nissan Titans can be so heavy and be able to be so quick.

That 21 years best selling truck is for ALL the F series trucks. F150 through F650 or however high they go.

Plus, they always cound Chevy and GMC apart, when they should be together cause they are the same thing.

A more fair comparison (selling wise) would be the F150 vs. the Chevy and GMC 1/2 ton combined.

But like Brotherdave said, who cares how many you sell.
