Since you have experience with goats, come wax/compund/buff out the hoofprints on my truck and we'll call it even.

BTW, what did you do to the refinery up there? I left for NJ on Sunday withg gas pices at 1.93/5 or so, last night I filled up the ride and it was $2.07 for low test.

I don't now what people are talking about when they say that the 4.6 and 5.4 get the same milage. Yeh the 04 and 05 trucks do because the 5.4 is more efficent then before but the trucks are alot heavier bringing the 4.6 milage down. I have a friend that tows his commerical lawn mowers(3 of them along with various equipment) 6 days a week with his 01 4.6 4x4 5spd. And after about 150,000 miles the only trouble he had were the rear end gears broke and the slave cylinder went out. The motor is still running the day he got it brand new.

I have a 5.4 5 speed. Yea I know, I had to make it myself, Ford wasn't smart enough. Well I get better milage with the 5.4. No one can say for sure that the 4.6 is better on gas unless they had both motors in the same truck. And I don't mean two different trucks with the same options but different motors. I mean one truck and swap the motors.

I agree 100% with JMC - as I usually do. EVERY truck is different. On top of that, every driver is different. I feather foot my 5.4 - as I have every truck and motor I've ever owned. Some folks floor it at every light. We all consider that "normal." Another thing to consider is that the 5.4 comes with a heavier rear end (9.75 " vs 8.8") and the bigger rear end causes more drag - especialy if you have limited slip.

So, I'll come back to my original proposition. Drive both as see what you think. It's your choice, not ours.

I used the OEM tranny that it came with. The Mazda M5OD-R2. My 4.6 was a Romeo so it had a 6 bolt crankshaft. I had to get an 8 bolt flywheel from a 97-8 4.6 so it would bolt on to the 5.4 crank. A few wires had to be lengthened but all and all it bolts right up. Engine management was handeled by a Troyer Performance 4 program chip.

So, is there like some kind of electrode coming up thru the seat bottom that makes you shift?

Alittle late since this thread is now 4+ pages long but anyways.. I have a 98' 4.6L and have no complaints, my truck has a 6 inch lift with 35' tires and no gear change as of yet, even though i dont have the right gear ratio right now, my truck serves me just fine and handles what ever i throw at it, and i really havnt done to much to the engine. my only problem is poor gas mileage(not due to my gas pedal stuck to the floor either, i featherfoot my baby) but once i change the gears it should be closer to how it was when it was stock.

I have never driven the 5.4L seeing as how this is my first truck (only 19) Ive never towed anything heavy, mostly just jet ski trailer or motorcycles.Hope that helps

Beardoge,

You must be a tractor guy...yes, it's a '40 H and a '43 M. There is also a '43 A that is behind the other two. I really love that garage!

Yeah, there are some pathetic, confused people posting in this one.

Just wish I wasn't the ringleader.
