PI Heads

Hello was wondering if the 5.4 heads would bolt on to a 4.6, i know i will need a different intake..anything else?

Also will the mustang heads work? I know the cams are different, i was planning on changing them to a set of truck comp cams.

Thanks

With the Mustang heads you will have to get Mustang valve covers, they have a different number of bolts holding them on. Otherwise will bolt up just fine.

If you use heads that are different than your block, along with the valve covers, you'll need different stud bolts that hold the front cover to the heads.

For example, I have a romeo block and used windsor heads, so I needed studs that would fit the windors.

Yes, definitely.

I had the heads sitting in the basement for several months, I kicked myself for not putting them on sooner.

Great headswap info in your link Ted. How much did you invest in the swap?

Not that much really, I was very patient and found good deals on eBay. I got brand new, 9 thread PI heads for $200, new head gaskets for ~$30. The valve covers were free from an auction I won and then sold off parts for what I initially paid.

The only other major expense was getting the head bolts.

I was careful when taking the engine apart so that I could resuse as many of the gaskets as possible (front cover, intake, valve cover, etc).

The 5.4 intake will be too wide for your 4.6 block.

Those may have not worked for you anyway, the intake ports were ported to fit a PI intake.

I am preparing to swap the heads on my 98 4.6 right now. Email me and perhaps we can work something out. ekrugman@sbcglobal.net
