disassemble the column / '89 XLT

On my '89 XLT I probably broke my ignition actuator link that connects the rods together from the key to the switch.

Now I want to disassembling the column to change the broken part. But i don't get very far.

The column after i took of the steering wheel:

I took off the screews with red circle. But I cant get that part over the end of the steering rod - the cables are too short.

How can I remove it?

-Toddy

PS: Not too many FORD - dealers here in Germany that can handle the job

Now I found what's broken:

I guess this is called the "ignition actuator link" as bigbronc already said.

Can someone confirm that i found the right part?

Does anyone have an official part name or number so I can order that part here in Germany?

Thx!

Hey toddy, I will get the part number for you at work on Monday and post it or email you with it. In order for you to replace the new piece, you have to remove the two tilt pivot bolts located just under the bottom of your last picture. One on each side. Also, the snap ring on the steering shaft, so you can remove the tilt mechanism. Also need to drive out the roll pin at the top of the actuator, but don't lose it, it will need to be installed in the new one. Congrats on the disassembly so far!

Heh

@rocket77

I fixed it with a screw:

Think it's more solid now than it was before. Hope it will work.

If its the metal one like I'm changing now its an E9TZ-3E715-B This is the lower piece. The one that rides on the drive gear on the bottum of the lock cyl is an D1AZ-3E723-C

Robbie if you could please tell me the secret on those 2 pivot bolts, I see the pivots but they have threads in the center I'm stuck right there.

part

I changed that stupid part 2 times in my '87 model within 1 year. Make sure that you put some lube in the track that slides on. this will help ensure that it doesn't break again. The part is made of pot metal. It's about as strong as a cheap toothpick. Take the broken part you removed to your ford dealership part counter. They only have about 1,000 of them in the back. Evedently, these break often. The part is cheap also. I wouldn't reuse the broken one. You'll be doing that again in a month or so. I don't know about you, but fixing it once was enough for me.
