On the 93 -5.0 i had the fuel regulator was on the left rear of the top intake. It is a chrome and round with a vacuem hose in the top of it. A quick way to check it is to pull the vacuem hose off and see if there is any fuel there. There should be NO fuel in the line. If there is fuel there it is bad. Also if the regulator goes bad be sure to check and see if there is gas in the crank case. When they go bad they dump fuel. If there is any question about it just change oil and filter to be on the safe side. Servicing the engine is a lot cheeper than buying a new motor or repairing.
Hope this helps.Keep the wheels turning!!!!!!

Have you seen any improvement at all since you made these few changes? Or is it still runniing around 6 MPG? Gas mileage seems to be a very popular topic here, based on the threads I have read.

I got my F150 (302 V8 w/220,000+ miles) and have been checking mileage closely. So far (just 2 tanks) I have averaged around 14.5 MPG, with about 85%/15% city/highway miles driven. I was hoping to be at least at 15 MPG city and 20 MPG hwy.

Have you done a full tune up? What about the fuel filter? Has it been replaced? What about cleaning the injectors and top side of the engine with an additive like Sea Foam?

Good Luck!
John

Yes..that's right. It actually has no rust at all, surprisingly. I mean for a truck with 221,000+ miles and over 10 years old. And I know the truck has never spent a night indoors! So I lucked out when I got this truck.

By the way, I added a fuel system additive on my last tank of gas, and it looks like it may have a small but noticeable positive impact on mileage.

A short update and something to think about regarding mileage:

I did a short (~10 miles) test this evening. I compared the miles traveled on the odometer vs. mileage traveled in the same time as measured by my Garmin etrex GPS-r. Here you go:

Miles traveled odometer.....10
Miles traveled GPS-r............10.5

The reason? I suspect that it's the size of the tires. The truck was delivered with 235/75-15's per the pillar sticker, but it is currently running 265/75-15's. This 6% difference seems to have translated into the miles traveled, and also the MPH, and also the MPG. Although it may not be all that much, it does turn 15 MPG into about 16 MPG.

So when looking for reasons for low MPG, look at the tires as well, I guess. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
John

WOW! You should get better than that.

I am fixing to start looking for why my mileage dropped from over 16 to 14 mpg. I am suspecting O2 sensor since when I hit big puddles of water the check engine light comes on. When I check codes it gives me O2 sensor . So I must have bad wire or non water tight connection. I gotta crawl under there and find out.

Hey 93F150 -

I think you misunderstood my last post.

I am getting around 14-15 MPG now, mostly city driving. The purpose of the post was to show that I am actually traveling more miles than what the odometer shows, therefore my mileage is about 1 MPG better. I assume this is due to the difference in tires sizes. I didn't mean to imply that I was getting 10 MPG. Sorry for the confusion.

John

NCCamper, I also notice your truck is 2wd from the picture. That makes a significant difference with those trucks. My 88 302 4x4 5spd only did 12-14 falling off a cliff except when driving from WV to SC. It would do almost 20 on the highway from VA all the way to SC. (its down hill all the way and mostly flat) . The point is 10-12 for a 4x4 auto is to be expected. Anything better is a bonus. Anything much less than 9 or so and it may be time to start looking for the problem.

My 2 cents
