blown spark plug repair in Southern California

Hi

Can anyone recomend a shop that uses the bigserts to repair a blown spark plug. My 2001 lightning decided it wanted to run on 7 cylenders and blew out the one on the drivers side 2nd one back.

At least it looks like an easyone to do.

Or are there any members that have the install kit that would be willing to make some mod money ? I live close to where the 15 and 210 freeways meet.

Thanks guys

Sorry, its a bit too far for me.

Check your yellow pages for performance parts stores. They usually know the local shops that do good work.

Meslo, shoot me an email if you're still looking for information on this.

I don't know of any shops that do it while the head is on the vehicle.. I called all around Temecula and Riverside too.

I know the ins-and-outs of removing the head and also a few places that use the aluminium insert and will put it in for about $25.00

The Capistrano Beach Ford dealership puts them in when they get a truck with a blown plug, I have had work done there before and they do a good job.

How much was the kit and where did you purchase it?

FYI; use a lot of grease on the tap to trap any cuttings. I turned mine a turn or so and backed off then turned another turn and removed it. Cleaned it off and regreased it and cut a little more. Don't forget you are cutting about 12 threads so expect to remove it at least 6 times if you are doing less that 2 turns before backing it out and cleaning. Brake cleaner will get the old grease/cuttings off. Go slow and don't be afraid to turn the tap. When you are installing the cert and you remove the tool the cert may back out with the tool. Don't let this bother you. Reinstall the cert and when you think it is bottemed out turn it some more. This will seat the cert and it will not back out with the tool.

and before you start make sure the piston is a the bottom of the stroke so the tap or reamer doesnt cut or mark it

well a few scrapes and lots of greese I think I have it in there It stayed down the first try and looks (like you can see down in there) like its all the way down.

I beleve the kit was 127 and the inserts were lik 7.75 each but the invoice is at work.

I have a new question how soon after I am done can I start the truck to make sure all is well. ?

thanks for all the tips and info I hope I got it right. It took about 90 minutes but knock on wood next time it should take less.

I got it from there contact in Torrance Ca from there web page.

As soon as you can screw the plug in and wire it up you can start the truck. Now you have a lot more threads contacting the plug. Let us know how it turns out.

Be careful, Ford has a bulletins out about using inserts. They are not authorized repairs for dealer. I know of only one time we have done one and there was no warranty attached to the repair.

I can understand Ford's reluctance to offer warranty for the repair. To do it right is time consuming and when you are rushing to meet the clock on a warranty repair could you make mistakes. Mistakes cost money and it is Ford's dime. Plus it would make it more difficult to hide the fact that the initial design was flawed.
