Exclamation engine stalling, eating oil, exhaust smoke what do i do?

Well, I have had my '01 SCrew Lariet since April, a birthday present, and I imediately noticed that on start up, there was a lot of white smoke in a steady flow from the exhaust pipe for about a minute, now it smokes for up to 5 minutes, and it is eating about a quart of oil every 2 weeks. That i figured MIGHT have something to do w/ the seals in the pistons. That theory may have worked out until last night on the way home in my neighboorhood, i noticed that when i started coasting at about 25 mph, my rpm's started to go from about 1000 to arounnd 300, then back up to 1000, then they would drop again and the engine would start to sputter like it was out of gas, or like a boat engine does when it is being choked. I have no clue now what it might be, and I would really like to be able to tell the mechanics what to look for when i take it to the shop if it comes to that, so any help is greatly appreciated, Thanks.
Trey.
