The recommended weight oil for my '97 5.4 is 5w30. I use Pennzoil, and its been getting a little harder to find 5w30, but 5w20 seems to be pretty much readily available.
Assuming it doesnt use the oil any faster, would it be ok to run the 5w20 instead of 5w30?

Hmm, I dont think so?
I just want to make sure 5w20 isnt too "thin" (or whatever the difference is between 5w20 and 5w30) and wont hurt the engine...

My personal opinion is to stay with the vehicles specifications.
I use Amsoil 5w30 in my truck.
I have noticed the Amsoil makes it easier to change fuel filters. J/K

Ford has recommended that all F150 engines (97-present) 4.2L thru 5.4L should use 5W/20. Along with many other Ford vehicles that previously were spec for 5W/30.
My service advisor told me that under Ford recommendation that all 97' to newer F150s use 5W/20. He said it had to do with the tolerances of these engines, and possible upper valve train oil starvation over time. Tolerances of 2000 and older F150s (Spec 5W/30) would benefit with the 5W/20 used on 2001 to present models.
If you get your oil changed at the Ford dealer, more than likely they are using 5W/20 Motorcraft Synthetic Blend.
I couldn't find the Ford service bulletin, but here is a copy of one on the Amsoil web page ...

But I have noticed something interesting. The 5W/20 used by Ford seems to be thicker than the 5W/20 used on my brother's Honda. Maybe the Motorcraft 20 weight is a "thick" 20 weight as others on this board have expressed?
