Snythethic oil vs. conventional

Snythethic oil vs. conventional
I just bought my 2003 Lighnting and am loving it!! I have been told by a few gear heads to put synthehtic oil in it. It has 300 miles on it and I'm planning on changing the oil at 500. Does that sound right to everyone? I've heard that you should change over very soon and other have said that it doesn' matter. Also, are there any real advantages to changing?

Welcome !
Congratulations on your new ride. Some will tell you that synthetic is not necessary to have long engine life, but nobody can tell you that it's not a better product. Some will tell you to have a substantial break in period on dino oil first. This is not necessary and many performance cars come from the factory with synthetic oil. My suggestion is to change your factory oil and filter at 500-1000 miles with a quality filter and synthetic oil.

Amsoil, hehe, thats me (Steps up on soapbox).
My engine leaked/used oil with the Mobil one synthetic so I switch to Amsoil and the oil leakage/usage stopped. I have the 25,000 interval oil in my engine right now and am using the Amsoil oil filters. I will have to change the oil filters at 12,500 miles so its two oil filters and one oil change at 25,000 miles (I will let people know if something bad happens). Synthetic oil pours better at lower temperatures and can withstand higher temperatures.

I don't know how dark the oil will look as this is my first attempt at the 25,000 mile interval. Dark/dirty looking oil does not mean it can't do its job.

Then why do you even both with a syn blend?
No amazing stories from me, use good oil and keep it clean your engine will last longer than the rest of the truck.
I'm a big advocate of by-pass filtration with oil analysis. No matter what brand of oil you choose, or which type of by-pass filtration.

If I wanted to change it at 3000 I would use reg oil.

With a blower I would ONLY use fully synthetic oil, heres why.
Oil vapors lower the octane of the air/fuel mixture. This can cause detonation with forced induction, synthetics put off a lot less vapors than conventinal oil when hot.
With forced induction, there is going to be some blow-by, not to mention the PCV, those reasons alone are worth it.

Switching to synthetic oil may have ruined more engines than it saved, as some owners think that a 10K-25K oil change interval means that the oil filter is good for that amount of time as well. Some of them don't realize that the oil filter needs changing to prevent blow-by due to a clogged filter.
As my father taught me, if you have an old car that burns oil, you don't need to do oil changes since the engine gets the oil changed out gradually as you add more every few hundred miles. Just do the oil filter changes at the regular intervals to trap dirt and sludge, and you're OK. Of course, on tight engines that don't burn oil, you have to do oil and filter changes.
Every mechanic that owns a shop tells you that regular oil and filter changes are more important than what brand or type you use. Very few drivers put the kind of DRIVING stress on their engines that demand synthetic oil. Even with synthetic oil, you have to do regular filter changes anyway.
