Question Best oil & filter???

I have seen lots of folks say they are using Mobile 1. I am thinking of switching to synthetic; is this the best oil?
Also, I see guys slamming Fram oil filters. I have used them for over 25 years with no problems. If not Fram, what is the best oil filter to recommend? 76,000 and runs great with no oil usage.
And finally, I converted to true duals with 40 series Flowmasters and installed AF-1...... WOW!!!! A definate increase in power and torque. Sure brings the 4.6 to life.

Thanks Again!!

The reason that the Fram sucks is because our trucks need an oil filter with an anti-drainback valve, and the Fram's is cardboard. I'm currently using Motorcraft, but I've heard good things about Mobil 1, purolator, K&N and some other filters.
I use Mobil 1 synthetic, because it's the best oil in the history of oil.

My truck told me that it likes Mobil 1 oil and Mobil 1 or K&N filters.

try the hypertech programmer intead of the chip i did much more hp and torque. I do also want to install the AF-1. and about the oil stay with the regular oil not synth you have too much miles to switch. you will get leaks.

I run valvoline synthetic, I tried that mobil1 stuff once, did'nt like wont use it again. Ive always used Valvoline in my other ford trucks with no problems, then started reading all the hoopla about mobil1 and tried it. NEVER AGAIN, made my engine sound like it had marbles in the oil pan.

165,000 miles on 97 4.6V8 with oil changes every 3,000 miles. Have only used motorcraft filters, and either valvoline or castrol conventional oil. Still no measureable oil consumption between changes, and blackstone lab oil analysis at around 120,000 miles indicated engine wear particles were way below normal

I don't know about Redline since I have not tried it but I like the Amsoil 5w30 25,000 mile interval oil much better than the Mobil 1. I am also trying an Amsoil oil filter. I have to drive about 10000 more miles before I change the oil filter.

They say OIL is OIL, but synthetic, well its priceless!

Hey man
Synthetic is a good move but once you switch to it don't go back and forth, its not good for the engine. It costs a little more but its worth it. As for brand and filter i have always used genuine ford Motorcraft. I have buddies who use other filters and oil but personally I have found good luck with Motorcraft.

As far as oil goes, you can't beat Mobil 1. . . but it'll cost you. Filter wise, I have, and will never, use a Fram. If you don't believe that they're worthless, cut one open and look at the internals. I personally like Wix filters. NAPA has their filters made by Wix. They have steel end caps and the internals are the highest quality I've found so far. Just my two bits.

SlvrBltOffRoad, I beg to differ on the switching back and forth of synthetic and convention lubricants. I have been using syn in the winter and conv. in the summer since '92 without any trouble. These modern oils are compatable , I see no harm in switching.

Fram filter WERE good 25 years ago. They have since sold to another company and have been made much cheapier/crappier than in the past.

Remember just because it was good 25 years ago doesn't mean it is good now. Change is constant.

As for oil that is a case of whatever makes you feel good inside. There are far too many opinions on this. Just do a search here and you will get as many opinions as there are members of this board!! A better question to ask may be "What oil and filter combo/change interval do you use and why"

Oil Filter: Motorcraft FL820S @ Walmart for $2.97.

Oil: What ever 5W30 is cheapest with rebates, $.59 - $.79 per quart. Change every 2500-3000 miles.
