I agree, take the V8.My buddy left me his 4.2 while he was away on vacation because his apartment parking isnt so safe. My 4.6 is quieter, more peppy and the gas consumption is really really close. You may pay more for tune-ups and such but I believe that most V8 will outlast 6 bangers.Just my opinion though.

I'm not offended because i have the 4.2 v6.
it all depends on what your using your truck for. my neighbor is a cabinet installer, truck is always loaded - v6 does him fine ('01 with 75,000). i've had mine loaded with tile or mulch or sand - no problem with power. if your pulling some "serious" weight on a regular basis - go with the v8. Another point to consider is mileage. I'm getting 25 mpg on highway. no v8 is getting that. This summer when gas hits $2+ a gallon (and it will) fuel economy may be more important than a "throaty" sounding exhaust on a v8. So consider what your using the truck for and think about cost.
just my .02

I have a 98 dodge ram and it's killing me on gas so i am looking for a f 150 and have ben told that the v6 have engine trouble and as far as gas milage goes there is not a heck of a big difference.. the truck is going to be used for heavy hauling some times ..just need to decide what to belive about rumors on the v6

25 MPG. I find that VERY difficult to believe. Sorry. Go with the V-8. You'll wish you had one if you get the V-6.

If your concerned about the power then go and drive both to compare.

If your worried about MPG its really going to depend upon the driving that you will be doing.

17 mpg
2001 5.4L
Conditions: No cargo, no A/C (winter), highway driving 95% of time at about 70 mph average.

Get a six-cylinder only if you think you'll never need the torque of the eight-cylinder.

Despite the unrealistic (over 20 mpg) gas mileage claims, I have owned the 4.2, 4.6, and 5.4 in F150s. They were all good engines in my opinion. I have kept records for gas mileage for all three at different times. The real world diference was only 1.5 MPG (over at least a ten tank average for each). The only big thing for me is that I love manuals. It is much easier to find a 4.2 l stick. I would throw in a vote for a V8 as well as long as you don't like a manual.
