i had the check engine light o a friend took to his dads shop and got that electric checker and it said a code P0401 which sadi somethign like insufficient gas i think to the exhaust or something, is that VERY bad? or what do i need to do?

I guess thats not bad, depends on the truck really (4x4 or 4x2, which engine, etc), what kind of shape it is in (other than the mileage)...

Mine was $10,500...sticker was at 12999 I think, had 96k miles at the time (got it in august...Im already at 101k).

Someone else can probably help you better on the value thing though.

For your code:
you can search the forums for P0401, and from what I saw, most likely culprit is the EGR valve (clean or replace it).

Hope this helps.

Check www.kbb.com for the trucks current value. If you are taking over payments w/ no down payment and no credit check hassels you need to take that into account also.

The PO401 issue is insufficient EGR flow. This may be caused by a bad DPFE sensor and or EGR valve.

I have also heard there at times can be some wiring that has problems leading to it.

I suggest cleaning the MAF sensor and resetting the PCM and see if the code returns.

if you review this sight regularly, you'll find that 100,000 miles is about mid way for the motor depending on how well it was maintained. as for blue book you'll probly likely in the $10,000 price range due to mileage. this will also depend on how well the trucks body/ interior has been maintained.(clean / wash + wax).

have fun and enjoy.

what model is it? i just bought my 97' lariat 4.6L 4x4 extended cab loaded every option possible (except sunroof) with 51k for $13,000. at first i thought it was a little high, but kelly bluebook had it at $14850. so it was probably a wash. dealerships never lose

I would say that give today's used car environment that price is just about right. Not a bad deal, not a steal. Given the fact that used vehicle prices are down at this time, the price would have been higher in other years, making it a good deal in that respect.

130k is good miles for a 97. Keep the oil clean and 200k is easy to do. The only down side is you can expect some repairs as things wear out.

In my experience, by the time I get to 130k on my vehicles they are 10 years old, rusted to pices and so full of french fries they just stink, but the engine runs great.

I would say that any vehicle that drives 40 - 50k a year has some good miles on it. You just need to do some searches here and read about changing the fuel filter, cleaning the MAF, EGR valve, and other things that keep in running good. Be sure and catch the allways exciting "which oil is best" debate."

The problem ones are the 97s with 13k. When it comes to low milage used cars, I bought two of them eight years old and about 30k, and neither one made it to 80k before I got tired of the poor performing sludged up engines.

tripmeter?

i would assume the smaller one is your TRIPMETER. you can reset it to zero to check distance on a trip or calculate MPG(miles driven divided by # of gallons used).

When I say what kind of miles, I mean was the truck used as a work truck, just a daily driver, did it take long trips? haul heavy loads? lots of stop and go?

That kind of stuff.

The two mileage indicators:

130k is your total mileage.
The one that has like 9k is a trip meter. Push the little black thing to reset it. I use it to tell when Im about to need to fill up because the fuel gauge isnt really even (get about 250mi on the first half, then ~80 on the second half)...

Someone referenced what type of miles it has. Generally highway miles are easy miles. No stop and go, the engine get up to full temp and the oil heats up and dosen't retain a lot of moisture. Stop and go city driving ( like a delivery truck) or hauling extreme loads all of the time would not be considered easy miles. My '99 4.6L 4x2 had 50-50 highway and city miles and was running great at 220K Miles. Check the thread abut the 100K mile club and you will be suprised at the number of fairly late model trucke that have really put on some miles and still run great.

130k on a 4.6 is fine on a 4.6--they'll go forever.
