How much for an engine swap?

I am looking to possibly put a different engine in my truck. The V6 just isn't cutting it for me. Approximately how much would a new engine that would have me going fast cost? I don't know much about engines. Most my knowlege lies in the Body and Interior parts of the truck.

I want something fast, and I figure possibly buying a built engine might be a cheaper alternative to buying a whole other car.

Any feedbacks or links would be much appreciated.

Before you look into swapping the engine you might consider modding the current one.

Which V6 is it? The 4.2 or the 4.6?

Ya I have the 4.2L...

I don't want to pour a lot of money into the V6 engine. Even though it has some potential, I don't want to pour tons of money into it and still not beat a lot of the faster cars out there.

I was thinking some kind of a V8 engine. Any help from there? Links? Prices?

Thanks

Well, I dont know enough to tell you if it will work or not...but I would think you need to find out:

a) will it fit?
b) will the engine mounts line up? if not would it be hard to make it work?
c) what about the transmission? will the one you have work?
etc etc etc...worth it?

hope you find out what you need though.

Back in the day an engine swap was purely mechanical. Will the oil pan clear the cross member. Will the motor mounts and transmission match up. Now is a completely different story. You still have all of the old fit questions but now you need to match up electronics, fuel system, intake and other misc sensors, ETC. You could prob, take the $3-$5 K and use it on a downpayment on a '04 w/ the engine you want. Or go for highly mod. V6 ( blower, chip , the works.

Thats what I am asking. What kinds of engines would I want to look at that fit those criteria?

Well, the other engines available for the F150 are the 4.6L and 5.4L, both are V8s.

As I said earlier, I cant say whether they would fit in your truck, or if all the electrinics, etc would be compatible...but its another step

Looks like you might want to look at some other options.

www.procarparts.com

You also might be able to get them off Ebay for $10 or so less.

Are their any DOHC engines that will fit our trucks?

just looking in my haynes repair manual.

It looks like the the v6 and 4.6 v8 use the same wiring diagram
the 5.4 has its' own diagram.
maybe cross reference some numbers may be anew eng wiring haness and a used engine and you'll be rollin' for under $7000
