just my opion but part of the reason the 5.4 makes such low end power is the heads dont breath well, makes low end power but hurts mpg and freeway driving and passing situations.
the new 3 vavle makes peak in the 3500 to 3900 range (cant remember the number) ford is adapting the 5.4 to compete and beat he 5.3 chev and the 5.7 hemi.
make of that what you will, but chevy and dodge are not adapting there engines to produce more lowend and you are kidding yourself if you think they couldnt do it if they wanted to.
btw my f150 alway pulls the chevy of the line only to be passed up at around 45 or 50 (this was before the vortech s/c

don't worry the 3 valve will have more of both, ford is not getting rid of low end tourque they are just adding more of that and more high end hp.
How? 1 intake valve low rpm 2 high rpm they do this with intake manfiold runner controls (block of 1 valve intake port at low rpm and then open it at higher rpm).
More tourque and hp also with variable cam timing, and the cylinder head design will also help with gainng more bottom end, midrange and top end.

the current 5.4 is by no means a week motor, everyone has different expectations and i am glad you feel you 5.4 meets you need. to me a vehicle that goes a 1/4mile in the mid to high 16 is not a rocket and is at best average in the acceleration department.
the new 3 valve will be pushing a 500 pound heavier truck so the added hp and torque will be needed and accelaration should be comparable to the current 5.4 03 trucks.
this is my second 5.4 and both get bad gas milage but i do alot of city driving.
btw if i had to buy a truck today it would be another ford supercrew with the 5.4 (a harley davidson f150) the new chevy is ugly and up until the last couple of years i preferred chevys style and i could not bring my self to trust a dodge yet. not downing ford but i think it is ok to ask for a little more. i dont buy it the brand loyal cr@p.
