Use 5W-30 it will be fine, Ford only recommends 5W-20 because of CAFE, so they could actually meet it. It is about fuel mileage, thinner oil (20) means a little less friction, which means a little more fuel mileage.

Nothing has changed in the engines as far as oil clearences etc, so no real reason to use an oil that will protect your motor "less" especially if you're going to tow...

If thinner was REALLY better we'd all be using 6qts of WD-40...

Mobil One is one of the most mentioned oils that I have seen on here. It is an excellent quality oil. I have not used it myself, I like my Valvoline Durablend 5W-30 which I change at every 3,000 miles.

However, you can't go wrong with the Mobil One. Trust me on this, before this thread is done you will have at least 5 - 10 pages of recommendations on what brand, type, and weight of oil...

Really don't matter the size of motor...

The other thing I should forwarn you that talking about oil is just about like talking about someone's mother...

The Motorcraft 5w-20 is a synthetic blend that has a Viscosity Index of 147. The spec that Ford has come up with makes any oil meeting their spec pretty tough. Unless you want the long explanation, your motor will run cleaner, longer using their speced oil. Mobil One meets their spec but has the same HT/HS rating(2.6) which means that there is no advantage to using Mobil One in this weight oil, it doesn't do more- it just costs more. Amzoil has a higher HT/HS rating (2.9)but is not API approved because of the huge additive package. You can move out of the 5w-20 range into a 10w-30 if you like as the current Triton engine is the same on the inside as those specing Xw-30. But there are really no advantages to that. The Motorcraft 5w-20 has been yielding some impressive used oil analysis and I would suggest that you stay with it.

Let me put it this way. The oil specs are in your owner's manual.

Who do you trust? The company that built the engine or somebody here who says to use something else?

not adding fuel to either sides' fire but...

I'm running the Motorcraft 5w20 in my 5.4 Expy and will continue to do so. Since Ford is generous enough (for $40grand ) to warranty it for 3/36k, I'll be generous enough to run what they suggest. On a side note, I did a little experimenting with my previous truck (01 5.4 F150). I tried various brands of 5w30 oils and then tried the Motorcraft SynBlend 5w20 and don't know whether it was in my head or not but I swear the motor was a good bit quieter with the 5w20. I also only use the FL820s Motorcraft filters too. Ah, I love oil discussions.....

Mobil 1 0w20 is out and is showing up it Wal-Marts. Those of you who want use Mobil 1 in the grade recommended by the manufacturer are now in luck.

The motorcraft oil that comes in your truck is what Ford calls a synthetic blend. The same oil sold by Conoco is not called a synthetic blend. It comes down to the definition of a synthetic oil. Mobil 1 is PAO (Group IV) basestock. Motorcraft/Conoco is a Group II+/III blend. Group III is simply highly refined dino oil, while Group IV and up are synthesized (thus called synthetic). Castrol started all this debate by selling Syntec as a "synthetic" oil when it was Group III. Mobil took them to court and lost. Now a group III oil can legally be called synthetic.

Thus, Ford markets the 5w20 as a blend since legally, it can. Its a marketing advantage.

Is Group III synthetic bad? Nope, just tends to be overpriced compared to true synthetics like Mobil 1, Redline, etc...

All that being said, the numbers on the motorcraft 5w20 look very good.

Basing an opinion that Mobil 1 isn't any better on 1 techincal number isn't a good idea. Lots of things that don't show up on the data sheets come into play in real life use. I'm not saying its the oil to kill all others, just that its good stuff. SO is the motorcraft.

The difference in the flow rate between 5w-20 and 5w-30 is not as great as the difference between 10w-30 and 10w-40. Mobil 1 is on the thiner end of the scale, so there would be even less difference between Motorcraft 5w-20 and Mobil 1 5w-30.

They are both good oils, but you can expect the Mobil 1 to hold up better if you drive it farther. Pick either one, and you have made a good choice. I doubt you could notice the difference in gas milage without some accurate testing process.

I don't trust what someone recommends in order to meet CAFE spec's.

I know this has been gone through time and time again and I keep coming back to:

If thinner is truely better then run 6qts of WD-40 its an oil and it will lube so why not????
