New oil filter didn't stop the rapping
Been getting a rapping sound for the first 30 seconds or so after a cold start (2002 F150 Supercrew with the 4.6L engine). Left my truck at my nearest ford dealer for 3 days before I took it back . They hadn't had time to diagnose it
I bought it at a dealership that is quite a bit further away. Did have some young kid say he heard it but would have to get a more experienced mechanic to listen to it. Then was told that they'd have to call the "Hotline". Finally told me that they didn't hear a rapping noise, but might have heard it skipping. I had them change the oil and filter and took it back. I still hear the rapping for about 30 seconds after a cold start. Anybody have any other suggestions
Thanks for any help

engine rap
I have a 2001 supercrew with the 5.4 triton, I thought was the best engine out there. I have lifter noise when I first accelerate. The noise will continue until shifts into 3rd gear, then stops. It will continue even on a warm engine after start up. Occasionally it will not make the lifter noise rapping sound. The dealer changed the oil to 5w20 which I did not know was even available. I have put a Superchip programer in place to see if that would change the timing. Still have the lifter noise. This should not be happening with only 60,000 miles, Any Ideas out there??? Thanks
If it were my truck I would try a treatment of Auto-RX to rule out the possibility of sludge preventing normal oil flow to the lifters.

You will put on a new oil filter and add a bottle of Auto-RX, then drive for 500 miles and change the oil. The crud will be in the oil filter. You can run it more than 500 miles, but you will need to put on another oil filter.

Hey everyone! That noise everyone is talking about is the same noise I've been dealing with along with a thousand other Ford owners. Some call it piston slap, others call it a lifter noise (hydrolic lash adjusters), some even call it oil filter antidrainback valve clicking, or fuel injector noise. All have to do with the fact that these engines generally make that noise. According to Ford, the noise doesn't alter dependability or engine longevity. Triton's are still the best truck engine out there, but I think this is a noise that we are alll going to have to live with, unless something destructively wrong is found.
By all means, get it checked and, most important, get it documented that nothing is wrong. Get all the paperwork you can and save it!

Mine makes the "ticking" sound also. Mine sounds like lifters, kind of like my old Chevy that had solids in it.
Mine will also has piston slap if I drop it in gear before the idle drops after first starting in the morning.
My extended warrenty runs out in may, so I might leave it over night with Ford one more time before it runs out.

Is it possible that all this rapping is caused by a crack in the belt? Check this thread out.

Thanks for the feed back on the lifter noise. I have been using 93 octane and it seems to reduce the occurance. I am going to try the engine cleaner that makes some sense. Has anyone tried this with any success?
The Ford dealer used the motocraft filter with the S designation. Just got home from driving it to Florida and back. Down there the noise was even louder, but only lasted about 10 seconds. This morning in NJ it was just about as loud but lasted about 20 seconds. Temp was mid 70s down in FL and about 55 in NJ. Now that I'm back in MA I'll see how it is in the AM at what I'm sure will be an even lower temp.
I know this is probably sacreligious - but do the GM motors have this problem too.
