Regular vs Synthetic Oil

With the mileage that is on your truck it should not be a big concern to "flush your engine, although it would not hurt.
The reason to flush is to remove any or as much of the built up sludge that the engine has accumulated over time. If you run good quality dino oil and change regularly you should be fine. The oil itself will do the same thing as the flush, just not as fast.
If you do decide to flush, get a new "cheap" filter. Remove your old filter and screw on the new one. Pour in the bottle of flush. Run the engine for 20 mins at 2000 rpm(don't drive it). I have found that a zip tie on the throttle cable lets you "adjust the idle". then drain the engine good and install the fluid and filter.
Hope this helps,
Mike
I use Amsoil and LOVE it!!

Based on this theory, if you have been using synthetic your gaskets never had the chance to get in this condition (dried out, varnished over) to begin with. By using synthetic, the varnish is never created and the gasket stays hydrated with oil keeping it from drying out and shrinking, therefore no leak to begin with. This would make synthetics more seal friendly too.
Engine flush, I have mixed feelings about this stuff. On a dirty engine it sounds like it would make sense, however, someone I knew used it on a dirty engine and it dislodged sludge or what ever inside and it clogged the oil pick up. You know what happened next. On a clean, well maintained engine like our's, why bother, it's clean. I guess it would be what makes you feel good.

I call all of my orders in individually and they ship from the closest dist. center. Most orders are recieved in 2-3 days. Barring any backorders or large(multi-drums or totes)
Good luck
I didn't ask any questions, just made a list of what I wanted, and he had it in stock.
I am new to the AMSOIL product. I used to run a Frantz bypass filter on a car with at turbo. I was once told by a mechanic that my turbo was the only one he had heard of that was still working at 140,000 miles.

I wouldn't use ANY engine flush chemicals. Can't be good for the bronze bearing surfaces.
Best to switch to a good synthetic with detergents like Mobil1, etc. In time you'll get rid of gunk if you change your oil when hot.

In most cases synthetic oil will be a waste of money expecially if you intend to change every 3000 mi, I ran my last truck 1990 chevy 350 on Valvoline 10w30 to 180,000 miles and pulled the valve covers to replace the gaskets and was amazed that there was zero buildup on the valvetrain but that was with 3000 mi changes. I currently have a 2000 F150 running Mobil1 since 10,000 miles changing every 5000 mi and at current mileage of 80,000 there is slight buildup in the valve covers but not much, As for increased fuel mileage have noticed none. Some claim that when they switch to synthetic that it was the best thing they have ever done but in reality the only way to truely know this would be to tear down the engine once a year to verify the benefit if any, of course you would need something to compare to in order to be fair. The bottom line is use what you feel comfortable with and can afford on a regular basis and feel confident you made the right choice for your truck and not because someone said it was better who probably does not know anymore about it than you do.

Remember when we used leaded gas? We changed oil at 3000 mile intervals then too. This is back when our trucks were getting 5 mpg. The 300-6 is gone, the 460 is gone, the 360 & the 390 died years ago. Technology has won with the Triton series of engines. GM has produced an engine capable of going 15,000 miles between oil changes. Even Harley-Davidson engines are going 100k miles before the top end needs rebuilt. Why are we still using the same old oils? Because we feel comfortable changing our oils a 3000 miles, because that's what our dad did & his dad before him? Technology will win once again.

It was $5 a quart, could you imagine trying to sell that to someone??? Heck people are bitching now when a conventional is over $2 in most cases and a good synthetic is still at around $5-6 a quart.
When I buy something, I always want to get the most for my money. When I changed to synthetics it just seems to work for me. I mean I'm on the same oil that I put in August of 2000. So I guess I'm getting my money's worth.
Also I am getting better mpgs about 5%.
I get better cold temp protection
Better high temp protection
less hassle with having to do an oil change at 3000(which is most unconvenient)
BTW Harley davidson is moving of to the 21st century and offering a synthetic for thier V-Twins. Too bad they can bring those engines up to today though.
Dang. Y'all seem to really like Amsoil. Does any retail store sell it? Is there a closer distributor in the south rather than out in california or something? The shipping charges on that would really suck!

Don't make this too hard.
Go to Amsoil.com, sign up for the 6 month preferred customer deal. Order 18qts of oil and four filters at dealer prices, shipping costs are standard no matter where you live. This will cover you for two years. The savings at dealer cost will cover your membership, any other fluids you order at cost will just be extra savings for you. I did this with my 97 at 89k miles, no gasket leaks or nuthin'. Went ahead and changed all the fluids to synthetic, she still purrs at 128k!
Yes, that is one of the downsides of using AMSOIL. You end up ordering a little more quantity to keep the shipping down per item. I have two cases of AMSOIL sitting on the floor next to my desk right now. I'll be installing a bypass filter when the wheather warms up a bit.
I'll use say 8 quarts to fill the system. (24 - 8 = 16) Then according to the regular schedule I'll change three filters a year, and add three quarts of oil a year. (16 / 3 = 5 1/3) That's a 5 year supply of oil.
How would you like to open an AMSOIL oil change center?
