Terrible Noise When Starting Up
I have a problem. I took my truck in for service a few weeks ago because my truck was making an annoying sound when running and when the air conditioning was on. They looked at the water pump and belts. They tinkered with the belt tensioner and but a new belt on. That fixed the problem. However, the next morning, it was cold, and when I started it up a very loud and disturbing noise happened for about a second or two. It was like metal gears or plates grating on each other or something. I took it back in a few weeks later because it really got on my nerves. They said it wasn't related to the previous repair and that it sounded like it was coming from between the engine and transmission. My friend said that it could be the solenoid or something not disengaging. Funny thing though is that it only happens when the engine is cool. Please, please, please, can anyone help?

Hey Myfordtruck98,
Mine does that exact same noise. I did not notice it at all until the cold weather. The colder it gets the worse it gets. Now in the 0 degree weather it is REALLYYYY loud. But only lasts for about 2 seconds then is gone until another cold startup. Have you gotten anywhere on it. Sounds like it may be power steering pump or something of that sort.

I haven't been able to get up under the truck because of the weather here in Auburn. I really don't know what to do. This is the first winter this noise has happened in.

Well I think that my truck was making the same noise as you described, and yes it turned out to be the fan clutch. My truck had been making a chirping noise when started cold for a couple months and then would go away. Recently I had the chirp and a loud roaring noise that got louder if I gave it more gas.
I got to looking around and noticed that when I turned the shaft for the fan clutch that I heard the source of my chirp. Well it's kinda hard to get at but I have a small bottle of Remington gun oil that I use on my semi-auto pistols and I was able to get some oil on what looked like a bearing. Right now the chirp is gone and so is the other noise. This may only be a temporary fix as the fan clutch will probably needed replaced, but for now I'm happy. Hope this helps some.

I think it is the starter. Isn't it around where the engine meets the transmission? I don't think it is the fan clutch because it doesn't make a chirping noise or get worse when I step on the gas...it seems to come from somewhere farther back where I mentioned earlier. Is there a way to check/fix the starter if it is the problem? The guy at the ford dealership wanted to take apart the transmission and look around.
