Electric Fan Install
Electric Fan Install
Well...to make a long story short, I started the electric fan install last night and I drove my mom's car to work today
I got the kit from Mike Troyer and don't get me wrong, the instructions and kit are both great. I removed the intake, battery and windshield washer container...no prob there. The problem came when I tried to take the fan off. The instructions say that the fan nut 'usually' turns in the opposite direction that the fan operates. So in my case, I would have to turn the nut clockwise. I tried this for 1.5 hours with different variations of holding the waterpump still so I could break the nut loose...final result. I broke a file.
So in my frustration I say...I gonna try to turn it the other way(counter clockwise). BAM. It breaks loose right away. It figures my truck is one of them that turns the opposite way of 'usual'. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing Mike's instructions. They are some of the greatest instructions ever. My truck is just a PIA.
Now, my shroud was another PIA. I guess it was the automatic tranny cooling tubes that were getting in the way, but the shroud WOULD NOT come off. I tilted it, twisted it and everything else but it would not come out. I had to unbolt the fan blades from the fan spinny hting just to get it out from the shroud...eventually, I cut through the top of the fan shroud and it easily came out. Now when I put it back in, I will have to bolt the top together.
Then I mounted the fan which was no fun either. Reaching down to the bottom of the rediator to secure the mounting rods was not an easy task for me. Well, this is where I stopped and asked my mom if she had anywhere to go today so I could borrow her car.
WHen I get home I just have to wire everything up and set the "on" temperature of the fans....wish me luck!!!

Oh man.
Hehehe. I've been dissed.
Saddest part is. . .Talley's right.
Don't be discouraged, XLT. We all run into 'suprises' when modding. It's standard procedure. But when you finally get it on and working. . .It's that much more gratifying.
Post pic's when you get done. I am not a big fan of the electric . . .um. . .fan (no pun intended) but the mod does look cool. (again- no pun)

well, I got one fan to work right. I can;t get the second fan to come on...I don't know why yet! Also, I have no clue where the A/C wire is so I haven't hooked that up yet...Any Hints? Plus I couldn't get my power distribution box turned upside down like in the instructions, to splice to an ignition wire. Can any one offer any help with the A/C wire and an easier to find ignition wire?
The performance is nice....throttle response is definitely better. There's no more 'lag' when I hit the gas. It seems to move right away and picks up better.
I wish I just paid somebody to put this thing on for me. Would've saved me 6 hours of frustration. AND I'M NOT DONE YET

Here are two links describing fan install.

On mine, the main fan power is wired direct to the battery. For a 'hot' wire that is on whenever the ignition is on, there is a red wire that goes to your MAF - splice into that one.
For a wire that is hot whenever the AC is on, splice into the wire that goes directly into the AC compressor. There are only 2 wires going to the AC compressor - the black one is ground so use the other one.

It is driven by a belt at the front of the engine. It is on the driver's side of the truck, about 1/2 way down the engine block. The compressor also has some pipes and hoses going into it. On mine, the electrical wires are on the top side of the compressor and enter near the front. The two wires are sheathed together - you may have to cut both wires and pull away the sheathing to see the color of the wires.

Cool...thanks man. I found the wire but haven't hooked it up yet. I got both fans to work now. I just had to adjust the temp probe in the radiator. I'll get some pics once I get all the wiring done...It's kinda sloppy now.

Beautiful....thanks a lot S'Crewloose.
It's funny while I was hooking up the A/C wire, I noticed that the ac compressor has a label on it that says "A/C Compressor"....I should've seen that.
And the splice to the MAF wire worked great...thanks alot.
