Electric Fans Are In
Electric Fans Are In
Just got back from a test drive, it raining out so I can't play. The throttle response is the first thing I noticed actually you can't ignore it, its that apparent. The install went smooth with the exception of my brain taking a nap while I was fitting the fans. I had the fans on the radiator 90° oppossed to how they are supposed to fit, in this configuration they are 33+ inches wide, then I thought I turned them 90° but really went 180°.
I called PPI for help, told Anita the fans didn't fit. After she assured me they fit and that she has them installed on her truck she told me Mike would get right back to me. While waiting for Mike to call I realized my mistake, of course I felt like a dope when Mike called and I had to explain to him what I did. It took about 8+ hours to do the whole job but I am just a bit **** about electrical connections, all splices are soldered and covered in 2 layers of heat shrink. All wires are enclosed in nylon sheathing and wire tied every 6 inches. Can you tell I'm used to working to N.A.S.A. specs?...
I'll have to find somebody with a digital camera to take a few pictures. The controllers are easy to work with, I used the odometer readout to calibrate turn on.

The thermocouple protrudes into but not through the radiator from the front to the back, at the top passenger side of the radiator which is the inlet side of the radiator, you spread the fins a little and poke the part between the tubes. It is connected to a relay control block that houses a relay, potentiometer and a fuse block. All your connections are made to this block except fan motor ground. I think one modification I'll make is to pot the thermocouple's into the fins with some thermally conductive silicone, I think if they had a more positive connection they would read better and be less likely to either back out into the A/C condenser or slide forward through the radiator. After you put the T/C's in place you use the pots to adjust when the fans come on, setting the low temp fan first then the high temp fan. A simple jewlers or pocket type screwdriver will work fine. Again, if I can get hold of a camera I’ll snap a few photos.
The tonneau is a Penda Custom Cover, it fits just like all the others fit a supercrew, I have not seen one that doesn't look like it turns up at the rear corners but it stays dry under it. all in all it is a great cover for under $200.00.

Great pics S'CrewLoose, thanks for sharing. Im hoping to put my electric pans in this week but due to the blower I have to mount em pusher style.
Where did you tie in for the AC clutch (im assuming your relay supported fan turnon with AC) and also where did you opt to connect your ignition power lead?

ZYG,
The relay does have a wire to attach to the A/C. The relay blocks are installed at the passenger side radiator frame, I ran the wire along a harness right to the compressor, cut and solder spliced just behind the connector.
Is there enough room to mount the fans pusher style between the condensor and radiator?

Great Post S'crewLoose, I am thinking about doing this for more Expy but do have a couple questions:
1. Can you retain the top portion of the OEM fan shroud? I would like it as I think it would add a slightly better finished look.
2. Can you come over and do mine? Your workmanship looks excellent! I'll supply the beer

Galaxy,
I'm on my way out right now, I will take that picture for you this afternoon, check back about 2 or 3...
Petrol, I did't keep the fan shroud top, but you do reinstall the plastic trim piece back over the radiator and condensor, I will snap that picture also....

Also where di you connect the ignition+ wire from the relay to turn the fans on when ign is on?
As for pushers, from what I hear a few guys with ATI's have done it. I do have a tranny cooler and of course power stearing cooler. The both mount on the bottom and angle down so there should be enough clearance between them and the condenser. Have to squeez fans in from underneath though. Should be an interesting project.
