One of the BEST reasons to get a 5-spd.

Push Startin!!!

Starter went out (bendex is broke). So a guy helped push me while I popped it in 2nd to fire it right up.

Truck is at the dealers, I will be picking it up tomorrow.

...while it's there they are fixing the rear pinion seal that has been leaking.

:sigh: .....bored.

Why standards are great.....When the slave cylinder goes out you can still drive...Kill the truck at a light push in the clutch like you would normally do to by pass the safty switch and start in gear......Standards are great....

I'm with you on this. I am definately pro-automatic, but it is really nice to be able to push start 'em. The only thing I don't really like about manual transmissions is the fact that if you have a cigarette, and a slurpee going and your are driving in stop and go traffic, it's a pain to always be shifting- especially with 3.73 or 4.10 gears.

Another good thing is that with a manual transmission, chances are that your wife or girlfriend won't always be bugging you to drive your truck. . .I don't know too many women that actually like to drive manual transmission trucks. Auto's are a different story. Chicks ALWAYS want to drive the truck then.

Then you gotta tell 'em 'hell no'.

Then they get all butt-hurt.

Then they ask why.

Then you gotta tell 'em, ''cause you drive like crap."

Then you don't get any.

And who needs all that drama. . .

Automatic's are for wussy's

Another good thing about manual is if your driving a wee bit to fast and your coming up on a trooper parked on the side of the freeway, you just down shift and she slows without saying "hey I'm speeding, see my brake lights"

They still see your front end do a nose dive.

Talking

When my wife went to buy her new car, she looked all over to find a 5-SPEED!! She loves them! She has no idea how to drive an automatic, because she asked me how it works, do you push on the gas to go, just step on the brake to stop, just leave it in gear at a stop lite etc:? She is over 50yrs old so is not a rookie to driving! Just has very little experience with automatics.

If I'm goin' too fast and come upon Mr. Trooper, I just hit the Overdrive Off button and "instant downshift". I've had many manual trannies over the years and other than the "push start thing", I see no benefit from having to shift myself. Oh yea, I could only get an auto with the 5.4 anyway.

and here I thought it was because you guys liked replacing clutch barring and such..

I liked being able to just shimmie under my car(was a standerd) and drain the standerd tranny then refill and your done.
this automatic bull**** is getting expensive with filter changes.

don't have a shop so its someone eles problem.

... automatics are 12 quarts i believe. I know it's 17 on the Lightning's 4r100

A 5 speed can be fun on a road with alot of turns and no traffic and cops testing the limits of your truck and shift the gears at every turn. Oh how I wish I got a 5 speed.

ya with the town driving i wish i had a stick, the trucks shifts so early in to 2nd and 3rd, i hate that, i wish i had a sport shifter like in the huynda's give's you more control...

And the stick is better for a fast take off.

but i still like my auto, but its kinda of halh and half in town...

manual transmission fluid

How often should the manual transmission fluid be changed on the 4.2 F150 five speed? Can any one give some simple instructions on how to do it?

Tools needed:

Tranny fluid/oil pump (autozone, oriely, napa, pepboys)
440 channel locks
oil catch pan
4 qrts of new mercon rated ATF

1. remove fill plug
2. put something under tranny to catch old fluid
3. remove drain plug
4. let oil drain out completely
5. screw in drain plug and tighten real good
6. use Tranny Fluid Pump from oriely or autozone
7. pump new fluid into fill
8. you want fluid to be full to the fill hole, it will leak out letting you know it's full
9. tighten fill plug.

Done!

Total time: 15 Minutes
