4.6, 5.4, how do we compare?

Anyone have any perfromance times for the 4.6 or the 5.4L F-150's? I know the 4.2 being a little lighter, and only having 25hp and 50 ft/lb torque difference can't be a whole lot different from the 4.6. Our stock 1/4 mile is around 17.5, anyone have the times for the 4.6 and 5.4? Don't be a smart *** and say 13.9@100, and say: "stock 5.4 L." I already know that! I've had the chance to race a few stock 4.6's. Every time they whoop me off the line pretty good, then after we hit about 60 I blow bye them. But I'm nowhere near stock. I haven't had a chance to race any 5.4's, but I know the supercrews are tanks. I think I heard in this forum, a guy ran a 17.4 in his. I'd hate to see what the 4.6 supercrews run. Man I feel sorry for those guys, it must be scary pulling out into traffic.

here is my take

I used to have a y2k 4x4 reg cab with the v-6 & 5spd.There is no way that it would even come close to a 5.4 4x4.I do however think one could beat a 4.6L excab 4x4 with the auto tranny. Heck, I am pretty sure that my old 4.2l truck was quicker (once you get in the powerband) than my superduty 4x4 ex cab w/5.4.

As far as pulling out in traffic goes, I jus put the pedal to the metal and go for it.Driving in traffic is another thing. The Superduty gets a whole lot more respect from other drivers than the f150 got.If I need to get over, I turn on my signal and wait for someone to let me in, if no one wants to let me in then I simply let myself in (they always make room). If you were driving some little ricer or something would you want a 7,000lb truck running over you?

Lightningcrashz, you are so right about that "once you get into the powerband" statement. These things take a bit to get going. Off the line the 4.2 sucks! But if your cruzing at about 40 and punch it, it will punch back pretty good. When racing people already going at a decent speed, I've only lost once! And that was too a S2K. I haven't raced any real muscle cars, but I've still beatin a fair share of imports and 4.6L f-150's.
LOL, yeah if I was in a tiny import I wouldn't want a 7,000lb truck running me over either. Hey punk a few of those ricers for me! I hate them, they are everywhere in my area. All show and no go! I always try to race them but they sit there and go 30 down a 40mph zone. Why put a loud *** weed wacker sounding muffler and a wing on your car if your going to drive like a 100 year old person? I guess it's because that's as fast as their car will go.

I don't know why everyone says the 4.2 sucks off the line. My truck picks up and pulls immediately and keeps pullin up to 110mph then starts to slow down to a top speed of 120-123mph.

My truck absolutely feels awesome down low.

maybe it's the 5-spd's 3.90 1st gear in the tranny compared to the 2.84 you find in the auto's.....

How much lighter do you think you are versus a 4.6 in the exact same trim as your truck? Surely it's not that much of a weight difference? Anyone know what the 4.2 weighs vs. the 4.6 ? Just talking about the actual engine here.

I'm with Talley regarding this topic.

I don't think the 4.2L is as bad as everyone is letting on. I have an automatic, 3.55 gears, and no chip (yet), and no shift kit (yet), and I have no problem off the line or from a roll. Perhaps it's the fact that the low speed intake runners in the composite (plastic) intakes are a little longer - boosting low speed torque - in the newer models. I don't know. But I can burn 'em pretty good off the line and I get slight chirping at the top of 1st gear. Not characteristics one associates with a lame duck motor. It'll really get juicy when the 4.10's and the Traction-Lok go in along with the power mods I have planned. I can't wait!!!

I never get tired of whoopin' up on the 4.6 boys that wrinkle their noses and ask, "Why didn't you get a V8 F-150 instead of that little V6. . ." Hehehe. It's almost as fun as blasting a Z-28 in my old Lightning. . .well, almost.

Hmmm...I must have different gears than you Wrongday. I can hardly get a chirp out of the tires going off the line. My truck totally seems like a top-end truck. It seems like I have no power in the low RPM's at all, at least in the lower gears that is. When ever I race, I sit and hope for people to come crusing up to me when I'm already going about 30+mph. Because that is where all my power seems to be when I punch it. To me it seems like I can hit 30-90 almost as fast as I can hit 0-60. You think you can explain this Talley or Wrongday? I figure it's my gears, do you guys agree? But hey, I can spin them for a long time in water and get it to scream for a good 10 yards when they go from water to dry pavement. But trying to peel out on just dry pavement, I'm lucky to get a little chirp out of them. You think my tires are playing a part in this? They seem like they stick pretty good. They are the General Grabber AW's. I think that is a pretty common tire for the f-150 and expedition. Waht do you guys think?

even though the 4.6 is not much bigger then the 4.2 it is still a v8 and stock it will beat a stock 4.2 v6 in the low end, and of course you could go out and buy all the performance parts they have for the 4.2 and beat a 4.6 but then if the 4.6 went and got the same parts it would be on top again.its the same thing as comparing the 4.6 to the 5.4

Falcon11: Look at your tag on the inside driver's door jamb and look at your axle code. or you can look at your rear differential and on the left side there is a tag that is attached to one of the bolts. these will tell you what gears you have. Let me know what it says and I'll tell you what you got

Probably not. My best time was on a cool October afternoon.
I was at 16 in the July heat here which is probably the best conditions you get in Texas.
