4.6, 5.4, how do we compare?
I can second that Talley!
I rarely ever get a chirp out of the tires even with the mods I have now. In water on the other hand, I can spin them like crazy. I've gone across entire intersections in the rain spinning them the whole way. I guess it doesn't take much. lol. Bye the way can you check out my older posts, I asked you and Wrongday a few questions. Thanks.

notirT, I don't see any 4.6 bashing going on here. I love the 4.6 as well as the 5.4. I think both of those engines as well as the 4.2 have very good room for potential. I might not totally remember how slow my truck was when it was stock, and by NO means is it fast now, but I've had a chance to race 4 f-150's so far and here are the results: Against a (what I believed to be stock) ex.cab XLT 4x4 4.6L. We raced off a light, we both eased off to start but he punched it at about 10mph, I did the same and he had a good lead on me (about 2 truck lenghts) untill we hit about 60. Then I blew bye him and at about 90 I had a good 4 lenghts on him. Next, was a stock ex.cab 4.6L. First we raced already crusing at about 50. He punched it and got about 1 truck length ahead before I floored it and blew bye him, when I hit about 80 I had about a 2 truck lead on him, then we hit a light and I knew he had the advantage from a stop. The light turned green and he screached his tires off the line pretty good. He had about a 2-3 truck length lead on me untill we hit about 50, then I pulled bye him and didn't let off untill I had about a good 5 lenghts on him. At the next light he turned right and sreached his tires(that is after he caught up, I was already sitting there waiting to go again). The last race I had was with a stock ex.cab xlt 4.2, already crusing at about 50 he tried to race...I don't even need to tell you what happened there.
As you can see from my list of mods, it didn't take too much for me to beable to beat stock 4.6's. Sure they kill me off the line, but in the higher speeds I get them back 10 times worse.

When I traded my 00 4.2 auto in.... I looked long and hard for a Brand new Regular cab 5.4. I had the money to buy one... hell Ford was gonna finance me up to 29K!!! I could've bought a damn Lightning, but there would've been Know way I could've afforded the insurance. Yes, I could've afforded the truck payments though.
After searching for about a month and no luck... I would've had to custom order. I went with the 4.2 5-spd.
The way I look at it.... My truck was 15,500 after 100k mile warranty before taxes and finance charge of 4.9 for 60months. The cheapest I could've had a regular cab 5.4 was 24,000. Thats a $8,500 difference.
Before I settled for the 4.2 5-spd... I searched long and hard for a 4.6 5-spd as well... NONE. At least at that time of the year...

Hmm.
I can see a definate trend in the thinking here.
I specifically hunted for this truck with the V6 and the Automatic.
I didn't settle. There were many V8 (both kinds) on the lots here, and some were pretty cool rigs. I WANTED the V6 and the automatic.
Here's why:
1. I, too, have many friends with Buick GN's. Heavy cars, V6's, Automatics, forced induction, FAST (with or without mods).
2. I have many friends with Super Coupe T-birds. Heavy cars, V6, Automatics, forced induction, FAST (when properly modded).
3. See the trend here? When properly modded the V6 trucks are a total and complete BLAST. And they don't suffer from the 'heavy motor plopped over the front wheels syndrome' like the V8 vehicles do. Like I've said before in many posts. . .it was trucks just like the one I have now that gave me FITS on road courses in my '99 Lightning.
So I guess my point is this: I completely understand what you all are saying about V8's. I like them, too. But for what I am going to do to and with this truck, a V8 is not the engine of choice. I'm not intending to fire anyone up. And I don't entirely disagree with what you all are saying (I felt the same way until I got ROASTED on the PIR road course by a V6 F-150). I guess you are gonna have to see- just like I did- before you believe.

Don't be bothered by 02XLT.... He's still depressed about selling me his sway bar for $100

WrongdayJ.... What made you opt for the automatic? Do you know how to drive a 5-spd?
That was my problem with my old truck... I didn't know how to drive a 5-spd when I bought it... 3 months later I learned how to drive one on my buddies turbocharged 00' 3.8 V6 Mustang 5-Spd.
After that I suffered for over a year not having a 5-Spd. and what really pissed my off is when I had all my mods on the automatic and I raced this completely stock 5-spd and he beat me by 3 lengths... I had enough. IMHO... the auto's for the 6's will always be .5 behind no matter what you do.

Hehehe.
I don't mind the guff much. Get's me thinking and it inspires others to think as well. It's all good.
Talley- Yea, I know how to drive a 5-speed, up until this truck all I had were manual transmission vehicles (about 7 late model Mustangs which I bracket raced, a '94 F-150 with a 5.0L engine, and an '85 Mustang GT (the last year of the carbureted 5.0L H.O.) It wasn't even an option in my mind to have the stick on this truck. See, I've had the exact opposite experiences that you have. Automatics have always had the advantage on me. Yes, more available power goes to the wheels with a stick, BUT Sticks don't have the torque multiplication ability of an automatic, and I don't know about you, but I can't shift as fast (even powershifting or throttle on upshfting) or as consistantly as a modded automatic can.
Another thought: I couldn't find a manual transmission that is strong enough to handle racing environment abuse for very long. The T-5, while it is certainly a good transmission in a light vehicle like a Ranger or a V6 Mustang, will NOT be a good choice for a heavier vehicle like a full size truck, or even a fully equipped convertable GT. It is simply not designed to handle high loads or high torque. . .it's built for comfort and longeveity, not for speed and power. That's why Ford when to the M5OD. It's a much stronger design. . .BUT again, even this tranny is designed to work and tow and haul heavy loads. . .but it's not suited for racing (hence the 'funny' shifter, hydraulic clutch, and very low 1st gear ratio).

Well, I can't comment on racing. I'm not dumb enough to even think about it with my ex.cab long bed. But I can vouch for the "little" V6's power. Mine is completely stock with a 3.55 LS and a 5-speed. As far as "chirping tires" goes, it took all I had not to "chirp" them. I was down right scared to cross traffic because the rearend would break loose with with anything more than granny footing the gas. I finally got rid of the stock P255-R16 Goodyear P.O.S. tires and put on a set of LT265-R16 BFGoodrich. now the tire will still chirp, but i really have to try to get them to break loose.
If I towed more I'd get a V8, but this truck was mainly for getting to work, and occationally towing my Bronco II, which with an 1800 Lb. tandem axle trailer is pretty impressive for a V6. and it does it quite well.

muddytrux- Looks like you and I got the same V6 in our trucks. I don't know WHAT V6 these other guys are talking about. I am nothing short of impressed with mine. Maybe we just got good ones. I don't know.

Talley- resistance is futile.
I will sway you back over to the Automatic side of the Force.
5-speeds are smoke and mirrors, man.
QUESTION: Ever heard of high stall speed, line lock, and slapper bars? Let's see ANY stick vehicle launch like a nicely done automatic set-up. I've had both and even on Slicks with a red-line clutch-drop. . .there were STILL auto's that could out-launch me. Here's the kicker- stall speed in these trucks can (and in my case WILL) be adjusted with the chip. Oh yea. Picture this if you will: Flip chip with the race side having a 2800-3000 stall speed and then the street side having 2200-2500? NO LOW END DRAG WHATSOEVER!!!! MWAAAHHHHH HAHAHAHA!!!
Of course all of this will be supplemented with an auxillary fluid cooler and Factory_Tech valve body.
As long as you are gonna change your tranny anyway- hehehe- this would be a perfect time to switch sides and come over to the winning (AUTOMATIC) team.
