If you want to keep gas prices this low for a long time, their is a simle answer: use less gas! The reason gas is chap right now is because people are driving less, going on less trips, and generally using less. When the demand is less, gas companies are forced to drop their prices to convince us to drive more. I too like the extra $ in my pocket, but the overall effect is negative.
Americans as a whole are buying way more car or truck than they need. The low gas prices and 0% interest convince them to get that Excursion cause they can afford it, not because they need it. They forget that 13 MPG is a lot of gas for the average household, and ends up costing them way more in the long run.
I'm not saying that people shouldn't be able to buy what they want, but it does seem rediculous for soccer moms to be driving around suburbans and excursions. What happened to the station wagon and the minivan? How many soccer mom's wth SUV's ever use the 4x4? tow something? need a vehicle bigger then a Volvo 240 station wagon?
I had the money to buy a 5.4L truck, but bought the 4.2L instead. Why, you ask? I don't tow a lot of stuff, or have a reason to drive a gas hog on a daily basis. I needed commuter transportation with the ability to haul things in the bed from time to time. I have had to tow boats and other stuff, and was pleasantly surprised at how well the 4.2 could tow a 4,000 lb load. I am happy getting 20 mpg on the freeway, compared to my dad's 5.4 that got 13 mpg on the last trip I borrowed it for.
So, I guess the take home message is, if you want gas to stay cheap, use less of it. I decided to avoid the whole environmental arguement, as well as the gas is a limited resource aspect.
Sorry for the rant, but I am graduating college with a degree in environmental science next week.

My sister is a soccer mom, has 3 kids and drives an Excursion. She needs the space for vacations, safety concerns, and also because her husband makes big $$ and they can afford it. If you have ever been injured in an accident, you'll appreciate moving up from an econo-box. Another reason is the Excursion is American made. The enviro-whackos would be p.o.'ed at you for having a Full Sized Ford vehicle.
BroncoAZ....actually thats not the case at all, if you read all of the reports on the lower prices of gas, it is because Russia refused to quit producing oil. In the long run it will hurt them in the long run but for the time being the major oil companies are having a fit over this. I think it is good to release some of our oil dependence from the middle east.

That's interesting about Russia, I hadn't read or heard it before. Since Russia is also in a poor economic situation, I'd guess that they're going for the fast profits instead of planning ahead.
I'd like to see this whole ANWAR drilling issue go away. 6 months worth of oil is not worth the long term consequences. It would be good for America to reduce dependence on foreign oil, but I don't see that happening anytime soon, and ANWAR is not the answer. I'm happy to say that the last time I put gas in my F-150 was just after thanksgiving.
On the home front, I'm trying to convince my dad to turn in his 99 F-150 5.4 4x4 extra cab when the lease is up this month. He owes more than it's worth, so buying it out of the lease is a silly thing to do. He's comfortable with it, but there is no need for him to have a 4x4. He lives in Tucson (no snow) and uses the truck for commuting. He never goes offroad, never tows anything, doesn't go on many trips, etc. I'd like to keep him driving a Ford, so we'll see what's available.

Gas is now .89 a gallon here in Fontna CA. I agree that people use much more gas than they need when they buy a vehicle they do not really need. Sure, safety is always a cocern and a good argument for haveing an oversized gas guzzleing vehicle.
It's true , alot of people buy vehicles that they can't use to thier full potential and waste much more fuel and money than they really need to.
Looking cool sometimes is very expensive and at times very wasteful. But hey, to each his/her own.
