2012 f150 eb motor break in?
Hello. I am waiting for my 2012 F150 XLT EB truck to come in. I was wondering if there is a motor break in peroid. Or do i drive it like my Harley, like I stole it. Thanks Joe in Santa barbara Ca.
I have always been a subscriber to "drive it like you want it to run". I ran a BMW (and whipped his @$$) with less than 20 miles on the clock. The motor itself has already passed a test before Ford dropped it into the truck. The rings need to seat as part of the break in. The biggest enemy is long times at the same speed.
Ford says that the old "break in" procedure is no longer necessary. The manual says only that you should not tow with it for the first 1,000 miles.

I wouldn't beat the crap out of it, but don't baby it either - unless that would be your normal driving style.

A lot of these newer motors don't seem to need a break in period, makes it a lot easier. For example, the Evinrude E-tec doesn't need a break in period at all an those are marine engines subject to continuous high rpm and a lot more movement and pounding. first season put 400 hrs on, now after 7 years she has almost 2,000 hrs and is still running strong and debendable. But as said ^ always a good idea to ease it into use.
The 2012 owners manual says try not to drive at a constant RPM/speed for the first 1k, don't tow for the first 1k, and don't exceed 70 mph or make full throttle starts for the first 500 miles that you do tow.
i asked the service manager about this when i bought my '12, he said just don't use the cruise control for the 1,000 mile break in period. i asked him about towing and he said i can tow with it right away and it wouldn't void the warranty. i did about 2 hours of towing with it after 300 miles with my bass boat, just cause i really wanted to go fishing...
I am waiting for my pickup as well, sounds like first of next month, we are planning on going camping on memorial day weekend. I hope to get at least 800 miles on it before we tow. Maybe a road trip for a weekend to get it ready. But I'll just take it nice and easy towing for the first time.
